Until the 14th century, there were only ships with one mast and one sail on this mast in Europe. In the middle of the 15th century, ships with three masts began to be built. Caravels, carracks and galleons began to be built in Portugal and Spain. The "age of the sail" has come.

At first, one sail was put on each of the masts. But already in the 16th century, three sails on the mainmast (central), two to three sails on the foremast (forward) and two sails on the mizzen-mast (aft) became the norm. At the end of the 17th century, oblique sails - cleavers - were placed on the bowsprit [4].

Such sails made it possible to move at an acute angle to the wind along the winding coasts and among the islands of the Mediterranean. The Latin sail could also be placed across the ship, and then it worked as a straight sail. It was possible to put two Latin sails "butterfly".
