What's that sound? πŸ‘€πŸ”” The bells are ringing across Bargara and the community today as locals mark the official start to the 2025 turtle nesting season at Mon Repos Conservation Park! 🐒 Rangers were thrilled to announce the discovery of the first two nests of the season, belonging to some turtle-y special nesters:

πŸ‘‰ The first track and nest were spotted on October 11, believed to be laid by a long-time nesting flatback turtle affectionately known as 'old girl.'

πŸ‘‰ A second flatback turtle came ashore on October 18, laying a clutch of 71 eggs!

These two nesters are among the oldest and most studied flatback turtles in Australia, having been part of the park's critical conservation program since the 1970s!

Mon Repos Conservation Park plays a vital role in protecting endangered marine turtles, supporting the largest population of nesting loggerhead turtles in the South Pacific.

The Conservation Park also offers one of the most unique ecotourism experiences in Queensland: the only ranger-guided turtle encounter on the east coast where you can witness the magic of turtle nesting and hatching!

Limited tickets are still available for the Mon Repos Turtle Encounter. Visit https://parks.qld.gov.au/parks/mon-repos to book!

First turtle tracks of the season at Mon Repos on Sunday 🐒πŸ₯šπŸ₯³!!
From yesterday, 15 October, Mon Repos beach will be closed nightly from 6 p.m. and will reopen each day at 6 a.m. This will continue until the end of May.
Random fact: the nightly closure used to cease at the end of April, but due to a turtle laying later this past season, a nest hatched in May 2025 and the closure period was extended!

Turtle season has begun! And we are just around the corner from the nesting and hatching πŸ™Œ!

πŸ’πŸ”” Our longest-studied turtle, X23103, has arrived at Mon Repos Conservation Park!

Late Sunday evening, 2 of our Queensland Parks and Wildlife Rangers were undertaking a routine beach patrol when they had quite a shock! Emerging from the ocean was our favourite flatback turtle X23103, coming ashore to lay the very first clutch of eggs for the breeding season at Mon Repos! πŸ’•

X23103 is our longest studied turtle and last nested at Mon Repos 2 years ago. This is now her 19th breeding season! 🐒 She's been a valuable part of our research program for over 49 years, breaking records and teaching us new information about turtle biology. She has laid more than 40 nests in her lifetimeβ€”what an incredible mamma! πŸ’– Based on research, she would have reached sexual maturity at around 30 years of age. Therefore, her current estimated age is 79 years.

We're crossing our fingers for another busy nesting season, with lots of turtles swimming to Mon Repos shores to lay their precious eggs. 🀞🏽 Mon Repos Turtle Encounter is the only Ranger-guided turtle encounter available on the east coast and plays a crucial role in turtle conservation research. πŸ“šπŸ’
