Congratulations again to GULGONG who took Bronze in the Small Top Tourism Town category for 2023 👏
From prestigious bygone buildings that were captured on Australia’s first $10 note to immersive museums and the oldest-operating theatre in the Southern Hemisphere, Gulgong – home to the famous Australian poet Henry Lawson – is a national treasure just waiting to be discovered.
If you’ve got three days in town, here’s a taste of what you’ll find 👇
Day 1
Stop off in Mudgee to kick start your day at local favourite the Mudgee Corner Store. Swing past the award-winning Mudgee Region Visitor Information Centre and select a hamper of local produce for a picnic lunch on Day 3.
Continue your journey, stopping at Gooree Park Mudgee. Start with a private chauffeured tour through the property and no visit is complete without a tasting at their cellar door.
Arrive to Gulgong mid-afternoon and check into your accommodation. Choose from the Owl Head Lodge, Goldfields Motor Inn Gulgong, The Telegraph Station Gulgong or powered sites and large cabins at the Gulgong Tourist Park. For a completely unique stay, consider hiring your own country pub — the Commercial Travellers House is a great option for groups.
Spend the afternoon wandering the picturesque streets. Step inside an 1870s heritage building to shop for souvenirs and knickknacks at Stacks Down Under, or pick up gorgeous garments at the town’s fashion boutique, Wear It Outt. Discover local artisans and grab a unique memento of your visit to Gulgong at The Gallery Gulgong.
Day 2
There’s no better way to start the day than with breakfast at the Butcher Shop Cafe Gulgong before immersing yourself in a day of pioneering history. Red Hill was where Tom Saunders first discovered Gulgong’s gold in 1870 and now where you’ll find Gulgong Gold Experience.
Enjoy lunch, a yarn with the locals and soak in the sunshine at the Centennial Hotel Gulgong (or ‘The Cenny’ as it’s affectionately referred to by the locals), then wander on to the Gulgong Holtermann Museum, housed within two iconic State Heritage-listed buildings on Mayne Street.
Sydney’s Opera House may boast glistening white sails, but Prince of Wales Opera House, Gulgong NSW, built in 1871, takes the crown as the oldest-operating theatre in the Southern Hemisphere. Performances sell out at a rate of knots so keep your eyes peeled for tickets.
Get to know Gulgong’s character in its charming 1800s pubs. Spend your evening at the Prince Of Wales Hotel Gulgong for a roaring fire, quirky decor and live music; have a yarn with the locals on the Commercial Travellers House’s iconic filigree balcony or back to The Cenny. Take a stroll to The Vault Woodfired Pizza, Tapas & Winebar for an incredible dinner and sample a few more local wines!
Day 3
Enjoy a relaxing morning with breakfast at your accommodation, then take a 30-minute drive from Gulgong to two of the region’s best kept secrets. The ‘Hands on Rock’ site features incredible indigenous stencils of hands made by the Wiradjuri people, and The Drip in the Goulburn River National Park where you can enjoy your picnic hamper on a shaded table by the water.
