Macquarie Manor, 172 Macquarie Street
This elegant stone building stands on the southern side of Macquarie Street, a couple of doors up from Harrington Street.
It was constructed for Dr Richard Bright, a medical practitioner, in 1875. The tender price was £3,275 and the contractor was James Gregory. (Gregory Street in Sandy Bay is named after him.)
The stone for the building was sourced from a quarry at Tea Tree and brought to Hobart by train – the first stone to be transported by this mode as the railway had only just started operating.
