In 1983, a 61-year-old Australian potato farmer entered one of the toughest races on Earth.
His name was Cliff Young.
The race stretched about 544 MILES from Sydney to Melbourne.
Most of the field was made up of experienced ultrarunners.
Cliff showed up in work boots and looked completely out of place.
Then the race started.
The other runners followed a strategy that included stopping to sleep.
Cliff accidentally woke up hours earlier than planned on the first night and started running while the others were still asleep.
That mistake changed everything.
He realized he could keep moving with almost no sleep.
So while his rivals rested for hours, Cliff kept shuffling forward.
Day after day.
Night after night.
By the end, the 61-year-old farmer had covered the entire 544-mile route in just over 5 days.
And he WON.
Not by a few minutes.
By roughly 10 HOURS.
A farmer in his 60s had just beaten a field of elite endurance athletes by refusing to stop.
