Today it was the Purple Sea, an epithet which I should not before have accepted. There were distinct patches of the color of a purple grape with the bloom rubbed off. But first and last the sea is of all colors.
—Henry David Thoreau (1817 - 1862)

For night's swift dragons cut the clouds full fast, And yonder shines Aurora's harbinger; At whose approach ghosts wandring here and there Troop home to church-yards… For fear lest day should look their shames upon, They willfully exile themselves from light, And must for aye consort with black brow'd night.
— William Shakespeare

The Green Rosella (Platycercus caledonicus) is a bird endemic to Tasmania.
This brightly coloured bird is a common sight at Bruny Island Coastal Retreats. It is Australia's largest rosella and grows up to 36cm in length. The Green Rosella's diet consists mainly of seeds, but also eats fruits, berries, nectar and insects. They feed on the ground and in trees. When breeding the bird nests in tree hollows. The Green Rosella is not an endangered species.

From the deep green seclusion of the hills,
By a cool road through forest and through fern,
Little frequented, winding, followed long
With joyous expectation and day-dreams.

I must stay alone and know that I am alone to contemplate and feel nature in full; I have to surrender myself to what encircles me, I have to merge with my clouds and rocks in order to be what I am. Solitude is indispensible for my dialogue with nature.
― Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), landscape painter

“They were interested in our adventures, especially one young man of our own age… and when he had heard our story, and examined our outfit, asked us other questions, but temperately still, and always turning to his work again, though as if it were become his duty. It was plain that he would like to go with us, and as he looked up the river, many a distant cape and wooded shore were reflected in his eye, as well as in his thoughts.”

That time of year thou mayst in me behold
When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang
Upon those boughs which shake against the cold,
Bare ruin’d choirs, where late the sweet birds sang.

In me thou see’st the twilight of such day
As after sunset fadeth in the west;
Which by and by black night doth take away,
Death’s second self, that seals up all in rest.

In me thou see’st the glowing of such fire,
That on the ashes of his youth doth lie,
As the death-bed whereon it must expire
Consum’d with that which it was nourish’d by.

This thou perceiv’st, which makes thy love more strong,
To love that well which thou must leave ere long.
— William Shakespeare, Sonnet 73

Do you remember when we went
Under a dragon moon,
And 'mid volcanic tints of night
Walked where they fought the unknown fight
And saw black trees on the battle-height,
Black thorn on Ethandune?

"Must be out-of-doors enough to get experience of wholesome reality, as a ballast to thought and sentiment. Health requires this relaxation, this aimless life. This life in the present. Let a man have thought what he will of Nature in the house, she will still be novel outdoors. I keep out of doors for the sake of the mineral, vegetable, and animal in me."
⠀ —Henry David Thoreau (1817 - 1862)

Our Mission

‘BrunyIsland.au’ is passionate about the preservation and celebration of the Island’s extraordinary beauty and rich cultural landscape. The stewardship of our land and the wildlife that inhabit it are our highest priority. We cater for guests who share these values and who seek the “tonic of wildness” - away from the crowds, the endless shops, and the clamour of city life.

Bruny Island, itself, is a microcosm of the Tasmanian mainland. It is blessed with an extraordinarily diverse range of distinct environments - spectacular coastlines, geological wonders, beaches, rainforests, mountains, lagoons, abundant flora and fauna - an environmental cornucopia; all at your doorstep!

Our properties fully encompass this environmental diversity offering a range of spectacular settings for communing with the Island’s elemental splendour. David Thoreau’s quote, “I have a room all to myself; it is nature...”, wonderfully encapsulates the experience we aim to evoke.

In keeping with this ethos, we enthusiastically support individuals, organisations, and projects that work to protect the cultural and environmental characteristics that make Bruny Island the very special place it is.
