This is your daily reminder.

If your shoulders lift every time you breathe in, you’re probably breathing from your neck instead of your diaphragm.

Over time, that can contribute to neck tension, headaches, jaw pain and that feeling of not being able to take a full breath.

Next time you take a deep breath, think about expanding your ribs outwards rather than lifting them up towards your ears.

Your neck will thank you for it. Small changes in how you breathe can make a big difference to how your body feels throughout the day.

Can you feel this through the screen? đź‘€

Your jaw might not be the place to start.

In my head, neck and jaw treatments, I often work through the ribs and thoracic spine first. When breathing mechanics aren’t working well, the neck and jaw often end up carrying the load.

Sometimes helping the jaw means treating somewhere completely different.

This is what happens to the front of your neck during a head, neck and jaw appointment.

A lot of jaw tension actually starts here, through the SCM muscle at the front and side of the neck.

When this area gets tight, it can pull your head forward, limit jaw movement and create pressure through the base of the skull.

So during treatment, I spend time releasing through the tissue, stretching it out and reducing that constant pull forward posture so many people are stuck in.

Less pressure.
Better jaw movement.
Better head positioning.
And usually… fewer headaches too.

Your jaw doesn’t work in isolation.

A lot of the time, jaw tension is connected to what’s happening through your neck, posture, breathing patterns, headaches, even strength and stability through the rest of the body.

I see so many people who have spent years trying to “fix” symptoms without ever having their jaw properly assessed.

In my head, neck and jaw treatments, I look at the bigger picture. Releasing tension through the jaw, neck and surrounding tissues to help things move and function better together.

If your jaw clicks, pops, feels tight, painful, or just “off”, it’s worth looking into.

If your dentist has ever told you your enamel is wearing down… read this

There’s a good chance your jaw is holding a lot of tension
And that grinding is what’s causing it

Instead of just stretching it open
Try working into the muscle

Thumb inside the jaw
Pull down, out to the side
Really get into the masseter and create some space

Reducing that tension can help reduce the grinding
And protect your teeth long term

Give it a go, let me know if it helps

Your nervous system is stuck here.

This area of the neck holds a huge amount of tension, especially if you’re stressed, clenching, mouth breathing, stuck at a desk or constantly in that head-forward posture.

The SCM muscle connects into your jaw, head, collarbone and nervous system response, which is why releasing it can feel like your whole body exhales.

Hailey Bieber talking about lymphatic drainage… and she’s absolutely right.

The lymphatic system plays a really important role in fluid balance, circulation, swelling and overall recovery, yet it’s something a lot of people overlook.

Lymphatic drainage treatment can help reduce puffiness, fluid retention and that heavy or swollen feeling, while supporting the body’s natural drainage pathways.

One of my favourite treatments to use in clinic for clients feeling swollen, puffy or run down.

If you’ve ever had a massage and wished the neck traction part lasted longer… this is for you.

In my head, neck and jaw treatments, I spend a lot of time releasing through the base of the skull and upper neck to take pressure off the areas that commonly trigger headaches, jaw tension and migraines.

This kind of traction work can feel incredible, but it’s also functional.

Better movement.
Less compression.
Less tension sitting at the base of your skull.

A lot of people don’t realise how much their headaches and jaw pain are connected to this area until we treat it.

Cody Simpson recently shared that he’s back on vocal rest following a vocal injury.

As a head, neck and jaw physiotherapist, this is something I see quite often in singers, performers and people who use their voice professionally.

Tension through the front of the neck, jaw and base of the skull can impact vocal control, endurance and the ability for the vocal cords to function efficiently.

In treatment, I work to release these areas and reduce the mechanical load around the vocal mechanism.

This is exactly the type of treatment I provide in clinic for vocal strain and tension related dysfunction.

So … if you’re planning a trip back to Aus, I’d love to treat you!
