The first outdoor works are in the ground.

Remainder No. 69, No. 60 and No. 65 - Jamie North made them from materials that carry geology before you understand what you’re looking at: cement, marble dust, coal ash, perlite, silica sand, fibres, oxide, organic matter. Small native plants grow from inside each one. The same species grow in the Lower Hunter Dry Rainforest fifty metres behind.

Part decayed architecture, part living ecosystem. In two years they will look more embedded than they do today. In ten, considerably more.

We placed them before the estate was finished. That was the right order.
When you arrive at Surga, these will be the first things you pass.

This is the shed.

Corrugated iron. Worn timber. Years of farm use absorbed into the walls.

This is where Surga Estate starts.

Not a purpose-built residence. Not a renovation of something already beautiful. A working farm shed in the Hunter Valley that we are asking a completely different question of.

Can a place built for function become a place built for presence?

We think so. We are about to find out.

This is what it looks like today. We will never be able to show you this again.

There was literally no way to get here.

That was the first problem.
Everything else came after.

When we bought this property, it had no formal road access. To reach the building site, you navigated across paddock.
Which was fine for us walking. Not fine for a concrete mixer. Not fine for a timber delivery. Not fine for any of the tradespeople who needed to show up and do actual work.

So before we could build anything - before the first tool went into the shed, before the first plant went in the ground - we built a road.

And here is what I did not expect:
The road changed the property entirely.

Once there was a road, this place had a beginning. It had an arrival sequence. You turn off the main track, you come down through the tree line, and then the property opens in front of you.

That experience - that first reveal - is something the property didn't have before.

A road is not just logistics.
A road is the decision that a place is worth arriving at.

This is Hunter Valley.

Not the cellar doors. Not the spa weekends. Not the resort packages.

No road in.
No power.
No structure.

This is the valley before the infrastructure. Before the season itineraries. Before anyone decided what it should be for visitors.
Land that has been grazed, planted, and left alone in equal measure. Cattle that know every fence line. Forest that has no interest in being picturesque.
Surga Estate is being built here because this valley - away from the version you know - is extraordinary.

We’re not finished.
But the end is visible.
We are going to show you why.
