This is Isabelle Choko - a famous chess champion and Holocaust survivor. Born in Poland, Isabelle was sent to the Lodz Ghetto with her parents during the war. In 1944, when the ghetto was liquidated, she and her mother tried to hide but were caught and sent to Auschwitz and later Bergen-Belsen. Her mother died a month before liberation. After recovering from typhoid following the war, she moved to Paris with her uncle. In 1956, she became a French chess champion and later became the 1st Women’s Chess Olympiad.
