๐ถ๐ง๐ธ On this day, August 17, 1937, Ronnie Butler was born in Nassau, The Bahamas, a man whose voice, music and unmistakable style left a lasting mark on the cultural history of the country.
Known as โThe Godfather of Bahamian Music,โ Butler was for decades one of the most recognizable ambassadors of Bahamian music. His work blended the traditional sounds of the islands with calypso, goombay and rake-and-scrape, creating a distinctive musical expression that became an important part of Bahamian identity.
His music captured the spirit of the islands - their character, everyday life, humor, people and the stories passed down from one generation to the next.
Among the songs for which he is best remembered are โBurma Road,โ โCrow Calypso,โ โBahama Rockโ and โWho Put Da Peppa in Da Vaselineโ - songs that remain part of The Bahamasโ rich musical heritage.
His contribution to Bahamian culture was recognized beyond the music scene. In 2003, Ronnie Butler was awarded an MBE in recognition of his contribution. Butler passed away on November 19, 2017, at the age of 80, but his music continued to live on.
