GABORONE :Botswanaโs simmering public-sector labour confrontation has exploded into the courts, with six trade unions launching legal action against government in a dramatic attempt to force the Directorate of Public Service Management (DPSM) back to the negotiating table.
The case, filed at the High Court in Gaborone on 12 August 2026, marks a sharp escalation of a dispute that threatens to further poison relations between government and organised labour.
The applicants are the Botswana Public Employees Union, Botswana Doctors Union, Botswana Nurses Union, Botswana Teachers Union, Botswana Landboards, Local Authorities and Health Workers Union, and Botswana Sectors of Educators Trade Union.
They have cited the Attorney General, Director of DPSM and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of State President, Defence and Security as respondents.
At the centre of the courtroom showdown is the unionsโ demand that government return to negotiations over outstanding labour matters.
The papers include a founding affidavit by Martin Onalenna Gabobake, several confirmatory affidavits and, significantly, a certificate of urgency, signalling that organised labour wants the High Court to intervene without delay.
The litigation turns what was already a strained industrial relationship into a direct institutional confrontation.
For government, the battle is no longer confined to managing disgruntled workers or stalled negotiations. It must now defend its position before a judge.
And for the unions, the message is equally unmistakable: if government will not meet them across the negotiating table, they are prepared to meet it in court.
