Leopard cubs in the Mababe concession - it’s been a windfall of leopard action over the weekend with these stunning cubs, a male leopard stalking not far from camp, and an incredible sighting across the river from a guests’ tent of a second female hauling her kill up a tree. Team Tumani is excited to say the least 🐆

The Mababe Depression - a vast, ancient lake basin in northern Botswana, stretching across the southern reaches of Chobe National Park and beyond.

Once part of a much larger lake system, today it is an immense, flat landscape of open grasslands and seasonal waters, and offers an exceptional landscape for game drives.

Guests have been loving their full-day trips into the Mababe Depression. There’s a magic to heading out across such wide-open country, never quite knowing what you might find. On this particular game drive, it was this beautiful lioness. Clearly a new mother, her cub was tucked away out of sight while she moved through the open Depression.

Sunsets and sunrises - often an experience guests have away from camp. And yet! We build and position camps with the movements of the sun front of mind.

At Tumani we encourage guests on their last day to drink in a sunrise from their star deck. Part of the reason why the rooms have a coffee station in them!

Long before the mokoro became an iconic part of an Okavango safari, it was a way of life. The Bayei brought these traditional dugout canoes to the Delta, using them to move through its shallow waterways, fish and go about daily life.

Today, the mokoro has become synonymous with experiencing the Okavango; taking something rooted in life here and introducing guests to the Delta in much the same way people have moved through it for generations.

At MmaTsebe, we take to the Mbudi River, flowing past camp, for our mokoro excursions. A piece of Botswana’s past that has found a natural place in the safari of today.

On the road between Khwai and Mababe, three young males emerged from the mopane, and put on a formidable display of male bravado for every lion within reach.

They scent-marked as they went and then, as a trio, roared into the bush. Their chorus reverberated through the forest, its low register resonating in our chests.

Quite something for a morning taxi to base camp 2.

Our guide, Max, explained that scent-marking allows a male lion to leave a detailed chemical record of his presence. His urine contains lipids that slow the release of volatile compounds, helping the scent remain detectable long after he has moved on. Roaring sends the message to lions farther afield.

Whether they were testing the boundary of an occupied territory, looking for females or beginning to press a claim of their own, we couldn’t be sure. Either way, rivals would be weighing the odds, while females would know that a male coalition was in town.
