We’ve made it past the May 24 weekend—which means it’s finally time!!! Now that the risk of frost has passed, you can confidently plant your annuals and start bringing your outdoor spaces to life 🏵

This is also a great time to mulch your gardens as we head into June. Fresh mulch not only looks beautiful, but helps retain moisture and keeps your garden beds healthy.

One of the most meaningful parts of what we do at SMS Home Rentals is seeing how certain stays evolve over time. We’ve had guests who first came to Brockville from Europe for a short visit and have since returned to stay with us multiple times!

What started as time away has gradually turned into something more familiar. They’ve not only come to appreciate the city of Brockville, but the people here as well, building connections and friendships that bring them back again and again.

May is the ideal time to book your window cleanings 🪟✨💫

We recommend contacting your preferred company now, as their schedules fill quickly during the month of May and waiting too long can make it difficult to secure a spot.

Did you know? Over the winter months, a surprising amount of dirt and dust builds up on windows and screens. Once the warmer weather arrives and windows are opened, that debris can easily make its way inside.

SO - When booking your cleaning, be sure to include the screens as well! 🏠

As we head into May, it’s time to start preparing outdoor spaces across all SMS properties—and for homeowners, this is your window to get ahead of the season!

Here are a few of the key things we focus on this time of year:

• Anything wrapped in tarps or cellophane for the winter should be unwrapped by May 1st to allow everything to air out. Spring rain will help clean surfaces, but if left covered, mold and algae can develop on warmer days.

• Pools should be uncovered early as well—the sooner they’re opened, the easier they are to balance (we recommend St. Lawrence Pools).

• Now is the time for general spring cleanup: removing debris, pebbles, and stones from gardens, setting up patio tables and umbrellas, and washing outdoor furniture.

• Begin preparing planters and raised garden beds so everything is ready when planting season arrives.

• You can start selecting your annuals now for hanging baskets and ground planters (we recommend Coville's Garden Centre).

• That said: avoid planting before the May 24 weekend unless you’re prepared to cover your plants. Even after a few warm days, nighttime temperatures can still drop below freezing, and frost can damage or kill early plantings.

One of the things I’ve come to appreciate most about this business is the variety of people we get to support through different seasons of life and work.

Some guests are relocating to Brockville and building something new from the ground up—a mother moving here for work with her two-year-old, settling into a new community and beginning the process of making Brockville feel like home.

Others are in a very different rhythm. We’ve had remote professionals who split their time between Brockville and another home elsewhere—sometimes in another province, sometimes somewhere warmer—returning when work or family brings them back. One guest, for example, works locally to stay close to family while also spending winters in a warmer climate.

What they all share is not the reason they come, but what they need when they arrive: a place that is comfortable, reliable, and ready to live in from day one.

That’s what we try to provide at SMS Home Rentals & Services 🏡

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to attend the “Bold Moves 3” leadership workshop with Shelli Warren of 1000 Islands Leadership Consulting. I’ve also been really enjoying her monthly Supper Club with a group of local women in business.

I’ve come to value these spaces more and more over the years—the chance to connect, share openly, and appreciate the work everyone is doing behind the scenes.

To me, being a good team leader means leading myself as well. Recently, I’ve been leaning into what I think of as a “joy mindset” and using that as a bit of a guide when making decisions. Not everything needs to be a yes.

It’s also been interesting to watch how booking trends shift from year to year. There’s always something new to learn, and I’m learning to embrace that ebb and flow a little more. I feel very grateful to be part of a community that supports entrepreneurship, and to be in a place where I can continue refining how the business runs and grows.
