🍂 WHERE ARE WE WEDNESDAY? 🍂

Hidden inside one of BC’s smaller provincial parks is a trail that locals have been exploring for years—but how well do you really know it? 👀

Can you name the trail (its known by two names), when was the trail developed and how long the loop is???

No Googling… we’ll know. 😉🥾

Interesting fact as to why especially females are obsessed with food in fall, please keep your garbages contained to not attract them further into town or subdivisions

The black bear raiding bird feeders this fall may already be pregnant. Her body just hasn't decided yet.

Black bears mate in June and July. The egg is fertilized right away and grows into a tiny ball of cells called a blastocyst, about the size of a pinhead. Then everything stops. The blastocyst floats freely in the uterus for months. This is delayed implantation, and it turns every fall into a test.

The decision comes around November, when the female enters her den. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the embryos implant only if she has built enough fat reserves to carry the pregnancy and nurse her cubs into the next spring and summer. If she comes up short after a poor berry or acorn year, the pregnancy doesn't continue and the embryos are reabsorbed. Her body quietly cancels what the summer started.

That is why fall bears seem obsessed with food. They enter a phase called hyperphagia, feeding up to 20 hours a day. Minnesota DNR puts their intake at up to 20,000 calories a day. Other sources cite 15,000 to 20,000, and some go as high as 25,000. The exact figure is debated, but the logic isn't: every calorie now is a vote for cubs later.

If she passes the test, the timeline is remarkably short. Cubs are born only about six to eight weeks after implantation, usually in mid-January, while she is still in her winter sleep. They are blind and weigh about half a pound each. She nurses them for months without eating, drinking, urinating or defecating, recycling her own waste into protein. Cubs then stay with her through the next winter and head out on their own at around 17 months.

A fair caveat: bears are not true deep hibernators, and scientists often prefer the word "torpor." Dates also shift by region, and females typically breed only every two years.

What this means for you right now: a bird feeder or an unsecured trash can is an easy calorie jackpot for a bear in hyperphagia. In bear country, take feeders down from fall until bears den, bring trash in until pickup day, and pick up fallen fruit. Fed bears lose their fear of people, and that rarely ends well for the bear.

She eats for a family that doesn't exist yet.
