Our last delivery yesterday was Bob & The Boys Farm Market

You only have to read the name to understand this is a family run business.

Bob and the Boys offer lots of fresh produce, baking, local fare, gardening needs, confectionary, giftware and of course ice cream.

Don’t we love our ice cream on a hot summer’s day!!! 🍦 🍦

Annapolis Royal is a town I could definitely live in - so much history here.

The town is filled with eclectic and interesting shops including our destination The Red Onion Market

Melody Tolson, the owner and also known as “the Queen Bee” greeted us warmly when we entered.

The Red Onion offers a wide variety of grocery items reminiscent of an old time country store but with a modern twist.

We spend a few moments chatting and a long overdue catch up before heading on our way again.

Onward to Berwick and a brand new location - just opened one week ago - Wild Thyme Farm

This sparking new market store offers local fare, produce, bread, preserves, granola and more.

We met and chatted with Taylor the owner who was behind the counter, apron on serving customers.

Taylor was all smiles - and no wonder the parking lot was full with lots of customers browsing inside.

Taylor tells me she’s very encouraged with all the local engagement - opening day was “bonkers”

Next stop Hennigar's Farm Market

But first a quick stop for a Tim Hortons coffee and a Pumpkin Spice muffin!

We didn’t just deliver HardyWares Preserves today, we also dropped off some cases of PEI Preserves and Goldhawk Farms Granola.

Hennigar’s Farm Market is always filled with activity - you can tell the staff enjoy keeping busy. Opening stock, working the ice cream counter, ringing in sales and helping us unload our van - much appreciated.

The produce looks amazing - a sale on corn in the cob this week and possibly the largest zucchini ever!!

I meet Elaine as she’s walking through, she stops to chat and I mention how big the zucchini is - “here have one” she insists.

And just like that - once again we are reminded of how local businesses have a vibe like no other.

Our first delivery today is the Falmouth Farm Market , near Windsor, Nova Scotia

This area has a rich agricultural history dating back a few hundred years.

In fact the Hants County Exhibition boasts to be the oldest in all of North America.

This busy market is a local favourite- a bit of an institution from fresh produce, breads, local meats and cheeses, prepared sandwiches, bakery items and even the Falmouth Scoop ice-cream counter.

Everything about this market screams small business - the owner himself - Cory helped us unload the van, and had a chat with us.

Delivery Day (s)

We set off bright and early yesterday morning for Prince Edward Island to collect HardyWares Preserves.

Along the way we popped by Goldhawk Farms for a few cases of their delicious granola.

It’s just over a 4 hour drive to our destination in Prince Edward Island - highways, old roads, and a massive bridge!

Of course we couldn’t leave without stopping at a roadside stand for some famous Prince Edward Island Potatoes.

We picked up 3 bags and surprised my mum with a quick visit as we drove through Glenholme. She was very happy and surprised to see us - and true to form was dressed better than me.

We had a lovely evening with Larry’s sister, Pat who cooked us a delicious homemade soup for supper.

Today we’re making deliveries - stay tuned….

A filling afternoon snack 🥣🍎

What happens when two great local products meet up??

We took our favourite frozen yoghurt recipe, added some Goldhawk Farm Gluten-Free Granola, and topped it with HardyWares Preserves Apple Pie Jam.

For today’s delicious experiment, we chose Goldhawk Farm Gingerbread Granola — and now we can’t wait to try the other flavours:

🍯 Honey
🍁 Maple
🫐 Blueberry
🍫 Cocoanerry

Let’s talk about getting off the beaten path.

I mean really getting off it.

Leaving the highway and taking the old road — the one that winds through the countryside, not necessarily paved, and crosses a one lane bridge. The road itself insisting you slow down!

As we cross, I smile to myself and think, I bet there’s a swimming hole nearby.

You remember.,,

That particular spot along the creek that only the locals seem to know about. The place where, on a hot summer day, everyone somehow ended up — towels, bathing suits and absolutely no plans to go home anytime soon.
It was our answer to air conditioning!

The road continues, and eventually we’re back on pavement.

“Turn right at Wyvern Road,” Google Maps instructs.

So we do.

We pass farms and wild blueberry fields and I’m enjoying every moment. Soon we arrive in the picturesque village of Collingwood.

There’s a church with a sign out front:

Service this Sunday at 9:30.

Once again my imagination takes over and I’m transcended back in time - back to our little village.

I can picture the villagers standing outside after church, chatting about the weather, the local news and who’s been up to what.

Soon after we arrive at our destination

Petals & Pitchforks Country Market

Really, how could you not fall in love with a place called that?

We arrived before opening time, but there was already a car in the driveway. I imagine the owners had arrived early to make sure everything was just right.

A few minutes later, the door opened and two smiling faces appeared.

“Hi,” I said. “We’re delivering for HardyWares Preserves”

And just like that, we were chatting with Megan and Nathalie — bright, cheerful and genuinely excited about their new products.

I love their enthusiasm, their warm welcome, but most of all their entrepreneurial spirit.

Our delivery travels takes us through many rural villages and more often than not, we see boarded up general stores, gas stations and restaurants. The result of being bypassed by busy highways, shrinking population and folks traveling for better pricing and selection.

I’m encouraged when I see a revival in the form of a country market. Folks like Megan and Nathalie who - (pardon the cliche) think outside the box.

I had a quick scan of their page and noticed the front verandah often transforms into a stage with live and lively entertainment.

I can’t help but think - what if??
What if we left a little earlier for our next appointment and got off the beaten path?

What if we all consciously made it our mission to stop by a local market in a quiet village and purchased an ice cream or other local fare.

Our biggest delivery Vegetorium Farm Market and I forgot to take a photo
I borrowed one from their page.

This lovely market in Fall River has been supporting HardyWares Preserves for over a decade.

We were surprised to see how empty the shelves were - today’s delivery will make a big difference
