🚸 Community Action Needed: Support Safe Crosswalks for Belleisle Students!

🔹 The Issue: There is no safe way for students to cross between Belleisle Elementary School (BES) and Belleisle Regional High School (BRHS). The road is narrow, uneven, and lacks a crosswalk, putting kids at risk—especially in winter conditions and emergencies. Students frequently walk between the schools for fire drills, programs, and special events, often having to navigate snowbanks, ditches, and oncoming traffic.

🔹 A Previous Request for Safety Measures Was Denied. The New Brunswick Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DTI) denied a request for a marked crosswalk, citing low pedestrian and traffic volumes. However, anyone who has walked this route knows how unsafe it truly is.

🔹 Local Leadership Supports This Initiative!
Mayor Randy McKnight and Valley Waters Council have actively advocated for a marked crosswalk, flashing lights, and a widened, plowed shoulder to ensure safe student travel. Their request was denied, but they are calling on the community to join the appeal and demand safer infrastructure for our students.

🔹 Why This Matters to BWC
The Belleisle Watershed Coalition (BWC) supports this crosswalk not only for student safety but also because it provides safe access to the Belleisle Marsh Trail. This trail is an important site for BWC projects, outdoor education, and summer camp activities for both schools. Ensuring safe access to these outdoor learning spaces is critical for engaging students in environmental education.
