If you believe everything you see online and from gear manufacturers, you’ll show up for your mountain hunt with 200 pounds of gear.

You don’t need it.

After years of guiding in the mountains, we’ve learned what actually works, what earns a place in your pack, and what can stay at home.

Our latest Sawtooth Pro Tips article breaks down the gear we actually use and recommend for a mountain hunt — from boots and clothing to packs, rain gear, optics and more.

The spring avalanches left their mark this year.

Seeing the amount of snow and timber they can move never gets old.

Days like this are spent exploring, reopening trails, and getting a little farther into the country than we were the day before.

Not a bad way to spend the day.

People ask what we do in the off-season.

This.

Hay, fences, horses, equipment maintenance, trail work, and getting everything ready before the first hunter ever arrives.

The mountains might be the fun part, but this is what makes it all possible.

First day on the job.

Meet Saeko, four months old and getting his first introduction to a black bear.

No pressure, kid… this will be a long road

Every finished bear dog was once a puppy trying to figure out why a bear smells the way it does.

It’s a long process, but it’s one of my favorite parts of raising bear dogs.

The Right Rifle for Mountain Hunting

One of the questions I get asked more than almost anything else is:

“What rifle should I bring?”

After guiding hunters through the mountains of British Columbia for years, I’ve learned that the “perfect” rifle isn’t necessarily the newest, lightest, or most expensive one.

It’s the rifle you know inside and out.

One that you’ve carried, practiced with, and have complete confidence in when a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity finally presents itself.

In our latest Pro Tips article, I share the rifles, calibers, optics, and lessons I’ve learned from years of guiding mountain hunts. Whether you’re planning an elk, mountain goat, deer, or bear hunt, I hope it helps you spend less time chasing gear trends and more time preparing for the hunt itself.

I’d also love to hear from you…

If you could only own one mountain rifle for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Just like Yellowstone…

Except without the ranch hands.
Without the 10,000 acres.
Without the cutting horses.
Without the helicopters.
And definitely without the money.

We’ve got one calf, some questionable fencing, a Kubota, and chores that don’t film nearly as dramatic.

Our version of a land dispute is arguing over who forgot to close the gate.

No dramatic background music. Just hay bills.

I’d call that a win.

At the very end of a mountain road, a private lodge sits tucked deep in the Purcell Mountains.

This summer, we’re opening it to a small number of private groups for a 3-night Backcountry Lodge Escape.

Guided access. Quiet days. Evenings by the fire.

Pilot Season now open.
