FIRE BAN IN EFFECT FOR AREAS OF THE PROVINCE AS WILDFIRE RISK RISES

The fire index across Newfoundland and Labrador continues to show elevated wildfire risks in several regions as of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 7.
The entire Avalon Peninsula is currently listed as very high, with a fire ban in effect. Forest vegetation is very dry, creating a very high risk of wildfires. Officials warn that a wildfire could start easily and burn vigorously, with suppression efforts expected to be challenging.
Permits to burn brush and other materials are suspended in the area. All outdoor fires, including campfires, are banned, and the use of fireworks and sky lanterns is prohibited. Activities on forested land should be conducted with extreme caution.
The Burin Peninsula is listed as extreme, with a fire ban in effect. Forest conditions are considered dangerous, with an extreme risk of wildfires. A wildfire could start very easily, burn vigorously, and spread rapidly. Wildfire suppression would be challenging.
Burn permits remain suspended, all outdoor fires are banned, and fireworks and sky lanterns are prohibited.
The Clarenville area, including the Bonavista Peninsula, and central Newfoundland are listed as moderate. Forest vegetation is drying out, with an increasing risk of wildfires. A permit to burn is required for burning vegetation, brush, debris, wood, paper products, or other flammable materials in an open fire on forest land, within 300 metres of forest land, or on land containing flammable vegetation.
Outdoor fires, including campfires, are permitted with conditions, and activities on forested land should be conducted with caution.
The Badger and Millertown areas, including surrounding forested land in central Newfoundland, are listed as very high, with a fire ban in effect. Conditions remain very dry, with a very high risk of wildfires. A wildfire could start easily and burn vigorously, making suppression efforts challenging.
Permits to burn are suspended, all outdoor fires are banned, and fireworks and sky lanterns are prohibited.
The western portion of Newfoundland and the Northern Peninsula are currently listed between low and moderate.
In Labrador, southeastern and eastern Labrador are listed as high, while the central Labrador area is listed as moderate. Western Labrador is listed as very high, with extreme conditions around the Labrador City area as numerous wildfires continue to burn.
There are currently no wildfires burning on the island portion of Newfoundland.
