This cottage page that I have worked so hard on for the last several years will be inactive after tonight. I am beyond 😢. What I would like to write is quite different from what I will write! I will not lower myself to that level although very hard!
I have actually been sick to my stomach over the last few days knowing I need to reach out and write this on my page as well as to all my guests. As you likely know many people have been trying very hard to shut down short term rentals for literally the last 2 years. They have been soo successful. Bonfield has been one of the last but it passed last wednesday with many rules that make it almost impossible financially to keep going. I am soo sad as the cottage is everything to me. As of this week, I will be shutting down everything and not having any families. I will take a couple of months to process everything and figure out my next steps. The new protocols are: license fees yearly for having a short term rental ($1,200./yr), they will come out and inspect inside and outside to notify of any changes that need to be done, insurance coverage has to be doubled, property will be reassessed which will increase my annual property taxes which are already $9,000., septic will have to inspected annually (instead of every 3 yrs), & a large paved driveway must be put in( no parking on lawn in front or back of cottage)
Unfortunately, I guess? When I started almost 5 years ago and purchased with a small deposit I did what i thought was right and set it all up properly and on the books. I appreciate so much that my families have chosen the cottage to return to the last few years. It means alot! I have worked my ass off on this cottage and spent thousands of hours. I absolutely have loved every hour! Unfortunately, most of these people that own short-term rentals own several of them (like 20) and don’t even live in Canada. They are all using platforms like Airbnb and have no idea who’s renting their places nor do they care. Some of the groups are in excess of 20, 30, 40, and 50 people and obviously the neighbours to all these properties are complaining about noise level and damage. I have had nothing but amazing families!! These people have wrecked it for someone like me. I am soo sad but as of tonight I will be closing Our Talon Lakehouse as well as all social media. I have been busy returning everybodies deposits the last couple of nights and again I am so sorry! Sooo sorry!
