With the purchase of Deer Lake Lodge in June 2021 I entered an exciting new chapter when I became a glampground proprietor (a.k.a. Deer Lake Lodge has hosted guests since the 1920's when it was built as a hunting lodge, it has been through many reinventions since then and was even abandoned for a couple of decades. I've rebranded it as Deer Lake Wilderness Retreat, and my vision is to create a community where my guests can relax in nature, reflect on life, and restore their soul. Phase A is well underway with the establishment of a glampground, and phase B will be to introduce workshops with a focus on wellness.

Meet the family behind Deer Lake Wilderness Retreat! 🌲✨
Hi everyone! We’re Lisa and Jeff, and we thought it was time to share a little more about the hands, hearts, and personalities behind this special place.

Together, we share a deep love for hospitality and creating spaces where people feel fully welcome and connected.

We’re also parents to four incredible kids who keep our lives full of music, adventure, and laughter:

❤️ Jessica is in her final year of nursing school, bringing her natural heart for caring for others into her medical journey.

🇩🇪 Isaac is currently living in Germany, volunteering to support refugees and taking on the challenge of mastering a new language.

🎸 Luke is our resident musician (guitar and drums!) who loves rock climbing and volunteering at camps for children.

⚾ Sam, our youngest in Grade 6, is always up for a challenge—whether it’s on the baseball field, playing bass, or solving a Rubik’s cube.

For us, this retreat is about more than just a place to stay. It’s a space to rest, disconnect from the noise, and build memories with the people you love.

We are so incredibly grateful to begin this new chapter in Muskoka and look forward to getting to know you along the way. Thanks for following our journey—we’re so glad you’re here! 👋🌿

🔥 Hot Tip: The secret to getting a fire roaring quickly is all about air circulation! Always leave enough space between your kindling and logs for oxygen to flow freely through the base. A tightly packed fire suffocates before it even gets started, so think structure, breathe life into it, and watch it take off. 💨

If you’re cozying up around a chimenea while camping, here are a few extra tips to keep it safe and crackling perfectly:

• Build a solid grid: Start with small, dry kindling criss-crossed loosely at the center, then stack smaller split wood around it to guide the flames upward.

• Keep it small: Chimeneas are designed for focused, cozy warmth rather than massive bonfires. Use smaller pieces of firewood to prevent flames from leaping too far out of the top opening.

• Feed it gradually: Add wood bit by bit to let the structure steady its temperature and draw air efficiently through the front opening.
