Wednesday, March 9, 2016. Farewell.

It's not too often lately that I am lost for words but ....now I am. The song "Hello, Goodbye" sung by Lionel Richie runs through my mind.

In the last six months we have fallen in love with this beautiful Island. We have so enjoyed our time here and plan to return to Living Forest next winter to site #131. We are boarding one of the BC Ferries at 7:45 tomorrow morning and heading home to Waterloo. We are going through the northern states which will be a whole new beautiful experience. There will be no more postings of this particular travel page.

Peter and I would like to thank all those that we've met and come to know here. Particularly Ken and Jackie who were the first to meet us for coffee and help us with any questions or needs we required. Also, those from Departure Bay Church who have made us feel at home and welcomed into their Community and their homes. Living Forest Campground is a wonderful home base here in Nanaimo and they do a wonderful job making everyone feel welcome. We've met many wonderful people from all over Canada.

We feel blessed that we have been able to experience the vastness of Canada....the prairies, the mountains and the awesomeness of Vancouver Island. We thank God for this awesome time in our lives!

And lastly we want to thank all of you for allowing us to share this JOY with you!!

HERE WE COME ONTARIO.....

Thursday, February 25, 2016. Living Forest to downtown Victoria (provincial Capitol of BC) and area.

Perhaps this being our last outing before we head back to Ontario figured we should visit the city of Victoria one and one half hour drive south of us. With word that the city was beginning to bloom and a good weather forecast we headed out.

Saturday, February 20, 2016. Living Forest to Shawnigan Lake and the Historic Kensol Trestle (1 hour drive and SW of Duncan).

After a week of rain we welcomed a day of some sun and headed out for some adventure.
First we headed for the Shawnigan Lake area.. Of course it's never boring "getting" some place here because of the beauty all around. The Shawnigan Lake is nice size with cottages and homes all around it. Good size for all kinds of water recreation and we did see one boat with a skier.....ooh to cool for me. Stopped in at the West Shawnigan Provincial Park and did a short hike down to the lake.

Then north a bit to the Historic Kensol Trestle. Had our packed picnic lunch in the parking area and then hiked the old rail lines trail to the trestle. There is a lot of info on the internet if anyone is interested. Quite amazing how they managed to build something like this so many years ago. Built in 1920 and is one of highest in the world? The largest wooden trestle in the Commonwealth. It stretches over the Koksilah River and is one hundred forty four feet high and six hundred seventeen feet long. The trestle reconstruction was finished in 2011 allowing walking, biking and horses and is part of the Cowichan Valley Trail (affiliated with the Trans-Canada Trail network). Very much worth the interesting walk.
Then off to some back muddy roads along the river. Found some interesting "scenery" and the Koksilah Prov. Park. All for a very fun day,

Monday, February 8, 2016. Drive to Parksville, BC.

Beautiful sunny day at 11 c. Nice day for a drive along the coast up to Parksville. Stopped at a number of places along the way and soaked up the scenery. The first couple of pics are from neat things along the way. We did stop at the last three parks for just short walks to see what they were like.

Saturday, February 6, 2016. Living Forest to Cowichan Bay, BC.

Decided to go to the Duncan Outdoor Market today to pick up some more of the homemade sauerkraut from Alderlea Farms booth. Also, some smoked salmon at Mad Dog Fish place. Then on east and south from Duncan by back roads to Cowichan Bay. The first few pics are on that back road drive and the remainder taken in the CB village. What a terrific day! (tends to make one forget its ever rained!). A.lot of little shops and restaurants but we spent our time outside and in the museum. Did have a fish and chips and chowder lunch. Also bought a loaf of French bread at the bakery. Then back home in time to watch the beauty of the sun setting colours on the mountains and valleys.

Monday, February 1, 2016. Westwood Lake Park, Nanaimo, BC.

Afternoon walk just 14 minutes from Living Forest. Close to 6k of groomed trail around the lake. We only went approximately 1.5k and then turned around and headed back to the parking lot. Interesting not seeing as many ferns but a lot of ivy on the forest floor and trees. Also, quite a few holly bushes and trees. The walk turned out to be very enjoyable.....after waiting in the car for the rain to stop. Next time we'll start out at the other end of the trail and eventually all the way around. 😜

Thursday, January 28, 2016. Day trip from Living Forest to Lake Cowichan to Port Renfrew.

Chose today for a bit of an adventure since the last four days or so it has been raining and the next four days it is supposed to rain.!! Planned on touring around Port Renfrew and check out the beach areas there on the Ocean. Wonderful drive with hardly no traffic. Waterfall after waterfall because of all the rain. But because of the rain there was also much flooding everywhere including the road at Fairy Lake area just before Port Renfrew. We had already been warned by others who had turned around and were coming back towards Lake Cowichan. We made it through the first flooded area (12 to 14 inches deep) but the second one no way. So we spent the rest of the day touring some back lumber roads and finding some interesting places. We had cloud, rain and sun!

Sunday, January 24, 2016. Morrell Nature Sanctuary, Nanaimo, BC.

Afternoon walk at the Morrell Nature Sanctuary. A new park we discovered just 10 minutes from our campsite. Only went on the shortest trail (15 minutes but took us much longer) since we weren't dressed for hiking. We'll for sure go back for a longer adventure. What we saw today is just amazing and wanted to share it with you.....surrounded by an unreal world. Everything is so lush and this is winter! The smell of forest is wonderful! The size of the red cedars are awesome....each one you look up at in wonder. You see a number of the "gnome" homes in the parks around here which evidently keep the young ones happy. morrell.bc.ca
