🎣 From settlers to today’s anglers, fishing has always been part of Stratford’s river life.
The Avon and its creeks were once rich with bass, pike, and trout — feeding families and fueling stories along the banks.

Now, it’s less about survival and more about tradition — but the joy of casting a line here never fades.

🦢 In 1918, Stratford received its first pair of swans as a gift.
Over a century later, they’re still here, drawing visitors from all over.

Every spring, the Swan Parade celebrates their return — a reminder of the lasting connection between Stratford’s people and its waterways.

🚣 Stratford’s love for paddling goes back over 150 years.
By the late 1800s, canoe clubs, rowing events, and even regattas filled Lake Victoria and the Avon River.

So, when you rent a kayak or canoe today — you’re part of a tradition that’s as old as Stratford itself.

🌧️ In 1883, heavy spring rains caused one of the worst floods in Stratford’s history.
Bridges were swept away, businesses damaged, and downtown was nearly underwater.

Today, those same waters bring peace and beauty — but they’ve always held great power.

⚙️ Stratford’s Avon River was once the heartbeat of early industry.
Sawmills, grist mills, and woollen mills lined its banks in the 1800s, powered by the rushing water.

The same river we paddle today once built the foundations of the community we call home.

🏞️ Lake Victoria might look natural, but it’s actually man-made!
In the 1830s–40s, a dam was built on the Avon River to power Stratford’s first mills. The widened waters became the beautiful lake we enjoy downtown today.

⚒️ From industry to leisure, this waterway has always been working hard for Stratford.

🌊 Did you know Stratford’s Avon River was once called the Little Thames?
When settlers arrived in the 1830s, they renamed it after the River Avon in England — tying Stratford to Shakespeare right from the start.

📖 From swampy creek to a cultural landmark, the Avon has shaped our city’s story from day one.
