Rio Perdido

Rio Perdido Here, where the canyon walls meet the rivers narrow edge, trees grow 10 times taller than those on the parched earth above.
(1778)

A one-of-a-kind 200ft canyon where, before your very eyes, hot mineral water springs from its rocky base, forming the crystalline river that is known as Rio Perdido. The perfect setting for our beautiful, ecologically sustainable, modern hotel...

You arrive through a meandering country road, surrounded by the Guanacaste Volcanic Mountain Range and the Miravalles Dwarf Forest, a rare habitat withi

n the Costa Rican tropical dry forest. Once within the 600-acre private reserve, you are drawn into a deep and beautiful canyon where a thermo-mineral river literally emanates from the steep rock walls. Once you make your way over the welcome bridge, you are received by the Rio Perdido Team with an always freshly-made, completely natural beverage. At this point, visitors generally change into garb, specifically suited for the day’s chosen activities. So it all depends whether you will be soaking in the dozens of natural thermal pools along a mile of thermal river, or you will opt for a long therapeutic massage in our world-class spa…or you decide for true adventure on any of our adrenaline fueled activities. Most popular, perhaps, is our one-of-a-kind Aerial Canyoning, which gives you a birds eye view of the Rio Blanco Canyon, another amazing place that had been lost in time, until late last year (2012). After a visit to the hot river springs (90-115F, depending on the chosen bathing spot), an authentic Guanacaste culinary experience awaits you at the restaurant. At the home base (where conscious architecture and construction has won Rio Perdido recognition and awards) you will find man-made pools that draw thermo-mineral well water of undeniable therapeutic grade. There is a private swim-up bar that serves anything from cocktails to fresh fruit drinks…there is a hanging bridge, panoramic lookouts with hanging platforms, and the start point for many more kilometers of hiking trails as well as the very respected Rio Perdido Bike Park. Many visitors spend days exploring the reserve. In addition to the canyons and the dwarf forest, the range is covered in gigantic tombstone-like volcanic rocks that tell of age-old erosive forces…and of cataclysmic eruptions that occurred thousands of years ago. It is a scene unlike anything you will see elsewhere in Costa Rica, or the world. Activities and Amenities:

miles of hiking on trails with dozens of bridges and panoramic lookouts

our Canyon Adventure

our world-class Spa

the Rio Perdido Bike Park

our mineral pools at the Base

our authentic Restaurant, featuring a-la-carte Guanacaste cuisine...buffet with fresh salad bar, meats and fish, side dishes, dessert, natural juice, coffee, tea.

Gisella has been on the team for six years.

Ask her about Rio Perdido and she will tell you that her interaction with her mates here has been therapeutic. It is not the kind of thing you typically hear about a job.

Most of the people here… who welcome you, cook for you, and guide you through the canyon are from the surrounding communities. That is intentional. It would be simpler to bring in trained staff from Liberia or San José, already used to hotel work.

We prefer that the jobs stay close to the land, and we train people here. Actually, we train EACH OTHER. Our team knows the trails, the seasons, and the river better than any manual could teach.

Like Gisella’s, there are so many beautiful Rio Perdido stories.

Most guests tell Kevin that he has the best job in the world. After spending an afternoon with him, it is easy to understand why. His story at Rio Perdido began with a passion for mountain biking. Today, that same passion for the outdoors takes him through many different experiences across the reserve, from biking and tubing to hiking and bird watching. What stands out is how much he genuinely enjoys sharing this place with others. Ask him if he feels like he is working, and he will probably tell you no. For Kevin, every day means being outside, exploring the canyon, spending time on the trails, and introducing people to a landscape he never seems to get tired of. Maybe the guests are right after all.

People often ask where the name Rio Perdido comes from.
During the wet season, the canyon becomes so dense and green that the river can almost disappear from view. Even a bird flying overhead could miss the water below.

Hence its name: Rio Perdido, the lost river.

Long before that name existed, the Chorotega people had already found value in this place. Small ceramic fragments discovered on the property were later identified, with help from curators from the National Museum of Costa Rica, as authentic Chorotega artifacts, hundreds of years old.

So, the river was also lost to humans… for centuries, before Rio Perdido was found again.

The new forest spa seems very simple, at first glance. Indeed, it employs functional design ideals that align with traditional Guanacaste architecture and it also subtly invokes the Japanese concept of Shibumi, which is all about understated elegance. The talented architects behind this project are Dania Saragovia and Alessandra Filessi. In every casita you will find many little details, illustrating the designers’ meticulous understanding of the user experience. It all makes sense and feels very right.

The spaces are supplied with high-end Earthlite Massage tables built specifically for us in California. You will feel their patented comfort immediately upon laying down. The casitas also have ultra-efficient and practically silent Haiku fans Big Ass Fans

There are countless little details that make for an optimal wellness experience.

A few tables at Rio Perdido come with a rather unusual view.
Ask the reception team about arranging a private meal next to the river.

The setting is simple. A wooden table, fresh food, and a thermal river flowing quietly a few feet away.
Some guests choose it to celebrate something important. Others need no particular reason.
After all, opportunities to share a meal in a place like this do not come around very often.

It happens all the time.
Someone heads down to the thermal river thinking they'll spend a little while exploring the canyon. Hours pass and they're still there.

The river has a way of slowing people down. Some find a warm pool between the volcanic boulders and stay put. Others move from one section of the canyon to another, looking for a different pool, a different view, or simply another quiet corner of the river.
It does not take long to understand why.

The thermal waters have been flowing through this canyon for ages, carving the landscape and creating dozens of natural bathing areas along the way.

No crowds. No schedules. Just a remarkable river and the time to enjoy it.

The hot mineral pools draw their amazing water from deep thermal wells; there are 3 of them, with temperatures ranging from 75 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. The visitor’s experience at Rio Perdido is centered around these special, life-giving waters. The very waters that have literally shaped these lands. They rise from deep underground and continue to shape this volcanic canyon as they have for thousands of years.

The West Bungalows achieve what we consider to be successful architecture, by integrating with the setting, respecting topography & hydrology, and offering the user an elevated level of privacy. The materials include locally quarried stone, locally sourced wood that was worked on-site, and internally elaborated copper fixtures. When all of these elements are in line, the guest is awarded with a positive energy and a healing sense of peace.

The Pacific Ring of Fire is vast, and Rio Perdido is one of its many expressions, shaped by a wild volcanic landscape.

Beyond the hotel and its magnificent reserve, guests can venture to seldom-visited waterfalls and mystical canyons, formed by immense magmatic forces and continuously sculpted by the persistent movement of air and water.

Essential connections with thriving nature occur in places that are far from the ordinary.
