A one-of-a-kind 200ft canyon where, before your very eyes, hot mineral water springs from its rocky base, forming the crystalline river that is known as Rio Perdido. The perfect setting for our beautiful, ecologically sustainable, modern hotel...

You arrive through a meandering country road, surrounded by the Guanacaste Volcanic Mountain Range and the Miravalles Dwarf Forest, a rare habitat within the Costa Rican tropical dry forest. Once within the 600-acre private reserve, you are drawn into a deep and beautiful canyon where a thermo-mineral river literally emanates from the steep rock walls. Once you make your way over the welcome bridge, you are received by the Rio Perdido Team with an always freshly-made, completely natural beverage. At this point, visitors generally change into garb, specifically suited for the day’s chosen activities. So it all depends whether you will be soaking in the dozens of natural thermal pools along a mile of thermal river, or you will opt for a long therapeutic massage in our world-class spa…or you decide for true adventure on any of our adrenaline fueled activities. Most popular, perhaps, is our one-of-a-kind Aerial Canyoning, which gives you a birds eye view of the Rio Blanco Canyon, another amazing place that had been lost in time, until late last year (2012). After a visit to the hot river springs (90-115F, depending on the chosen bathing spot), an authentic Guanacaste culinary experience awaits you at the restaurant. At the home base (where conscious architecture and construction has won Rio Perdido recognition and awards) you will find man-made pools that draw thermo-mineral well water of undeniable therapeutic grade. There is a private swim-up bar that serves anything from cocktails to fresh fruit drinks…there is a hanging bridge, panoramic lookouts with hanging platforms, and the start point for many more kilometers of hiking trails as well as the very respected Rio Perdido Bike Park. Many visitors spend days exploring the reserve. In addition to the canyons and the dwarf forest, the range is covered in gigantic tombstone-like volcanic rocks that tell of age-old erosive forces…and of cataclysmic eruptions that occurred thousands of years ago. Inspired by the tropical forest, the highly functional designs that you’ll find in the adjacent communities, and also the Japanese philosophy of Shibumi, the project celebrates natural materials and meticulous attention to the guest experience.

This is a setting where treatments have a more profound effect.

From above, the river looks like a living artery running through the forest. It does far more than shape the canyon.

The water sustains a corridor of tall, dense vegetation that contrasts sharply with the drier land surrounding it. Inside the canyon, ojoches, espaveles, and ceibos grow well over thirty metres. And yet, just above these gorges, the landscape is a different one entirely. That contrast is one of the reasons biodiversity is so rich across the reserve.

Protecting a landscape like this requires more than simply leaving it alone. During the dry season, when fire risk rises, Rio Perdido's 20-person Fire Brigade works year-round to reduce fuel loads, monitor the reserve, and help protect one of Costa Rica's rarest ecosystems.

Nature created this forest. Looking after it is our responsibility.

Rio Perdido was designed so no one has to choose…

Mornings can start with a soak in the thermal river, where the water arrives already warm, heated by the magmatic flows of the Guanacaste Volcanic Sierra. Afternoons can take you to the trails: nearly 40 kilometres of them across volcanic terrain, open to first-time riders and experienced cyclists alike.

Some people spend hours in the water. Others head straight for the hills and mesas. Many end up doing both.

Adventure and relaxation don't compete with each other here.
Mixed together, they make for an optimal wellness experience.

The West Bungalows were not placed where the views are best. Instead, they built where the natural terrain and the flora would not be significantly affected.

During the land panning process, Vida Design Studio carefully read the topo, geology, and hydrology of the site. The process avoided leveling and land movement. Each bungalow raised on pilings so the ground underneath stays as it was. Water runs where it always ran, animals walk under the floors, and plants continue to grow…

Architects, Studio Saxe and Dania Saragovia, carefully and consciously selected materials from our provinces queries and wood farms. Rather than importing plumbing, copper fixtures were elaborated internally by master welders.

Flattening the land would have been faster and every unit would have had the same view. Following it took longer and gave each one privacy instead.

Trails, natural corridors, and affluents. There are now about 40km of these, within the Rio Perdido Reserve. They cross volcanic plateaus, tropical dry forest, and the canyons below. Most of these trails are ideal for hiking, some are considered the best mountain biking single track in the region… and some take you to and through RP’s mystical rivers.. Then there’s the Canyon Adventure, which is basically an aerial trail. The cables and bridges move you through the empty spaces, carved by time and the elements. These paths generally follow the topography instead of cutting through it. This makes them slower to build. Some sections change quite a bit as the year progresses and the climate varies. So, here you can move around by foot, on a bike, in the water, or through the air. It all feels natural… it stimulates our innate sense of adventure and thus, it is part of that beautiful wellness energy, that must be shared with our setting for it to be optimal.
