Finally after 32 years on the Osa, I saw my first full view of an ocelot!
Chasing something in the utility shed about 7:30 AM.
Its been an unexpectedly busy season, almost like the pre-pandemic years!
And lots of unusual happenings.
Most noticeable is we never had a dry season so the temps have stayed down and the river is still cool for bathing.
But the lack of strong sun has caused a lack of fruit and is definitely affecting the birds.
We had a male orange-collared Manakin on the feeder for the first time ever. He came regularly for a couple of weeks.

After15 years of nurturing various trees, both planted and volunteers, we have succeeded in attracting, in quantity, a very special, regionally endemic hummingbird.
Some trees of this species are apparently rejected and just not "right" but we finally have a few that they love!
A few days ago we counted 5 individuals at the same time.
The very small White-crested Coquette is one of our most spectacular species of hummingbird and are sought after by many birders that come our way. The trees are a member of the family Rubiaceae, which also includes coffee,

A warm tropical afternoon on the Rio Tigre.

We still have plenty of room for the end of February and March!

Come join us and get a break from that cold and damp northern weather.

In the last two days some of the highlights were:
A tayra, which is a large black weasel, ambled through the front yard.
A pair of Great Curassow (the local version of a wild turkey) were feeding on the banana plant behind the showers and a small covey of one of the hardest species to find for guests, the Marbled Wood-Quail, were foraging out in the open next to the showers. That last one is a first time ever event. Actually, they have been hanging around for a couple weeks but never in the open.
We are lousy photographers but really wanted to share these.

We had a wonderful holiday season here on the Rio Tigre.
The season started with the Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count on Dec. 16.
Our three teams, 15 participants, covered just a small part of the official circle. We logged 192 species and 1167 individuals on count day! We have not yet tallied count week!
Amazingly, during count day and week, we recorded 4 species of owl! Mark Vukovich, a guest who helped with the count, got a photo of the Choco Screech-Owl perched on the private cabin structure. What a treat!
Immediately after the count we were about as full as we can handle, with lots of wonderful, interesting guests. We made a lot of friends and shared some great memories.

One of the most magical and peaceful spots on the Osa Peninsula. Located in the national forest (Reserva Forestal Golfo Dulce) surrounding the world famous Corcovado National Park. A national park trail head less than a km. away.
Our property overlooks a beautiful river for bathing and exploring.
6 forest trails leading to a lagoon filled with life, an incredible overlook of the forests and the gulf, our 50 ft waterfall, a wonderful forest swamp and a great variety of forest types including old growth, secondary, riparian.

Our favorite time of the year is December and early January when all is green and the weather is still cool from the past rainy season. Birds and mammals are all very active throughout the day, still not taking their mid day siesta as they will later in the dry season. The bonus is the amphibians, the majority who mate in the rainier times, are still calling, making for a productive night walk.

We offer you a unique way to experience the rainforests of the Osa Peninsula.
A small venue with only 5 rooms allows us to provide a different sort of ambiance not found at the larger lodges.

Imagine:

Waking up to a chorus of bird sound just outside your room.

Relaxing in comfort in the forest and all its creatures in easy view.

Enjoying the antics of the small squirrel monkeys while enjoying a hearty breakfast .

Dining in the forest with some of the best food offered in Costa Rica, home-made simple gourmet with super fresh ingredients.
