The last days we harvested the hibiscus 🌺 in our garden. Now they just have to dry in the sun.
Hibiscus is traditionally used to make bissap, a juice or more precisely a hibiscus ice tea that is both delicious and healthy.
In our holiday home you will always find dried hibiscus and instructions to make this traditional beverage yourself.

Over the past months we have been working hard on the garden of Casa Pé di Polon and that starts to be visible. We planted several trees like papaya, banana and coco and sew vegetables like tomatoes, carrots and lettuce. Basil, coriander and parsley to bring some extra taste to our dishes and mint, hibiscus and lemon grass to make some nice herbal tea. Corn and beans are the traditional crops here in Cape Verde and therefore a crucial part of the garden at this time of the year.

A passarinha by our house. The Grey-headed Kingfisher (Halcyon leucocephala) is one of the national symbols of Cape Verde. According to the local tradition, these birds are the incarnation of people who have passed away. So, when you see one, it might be a friend or a relative coming to greet you from the afterlife.

The surroundings of our holiday home are ideal for hikes, especially during this time of the year. This tour, we recently made, starts and finishes in front of Casa Pé di Polon and takes you uphill where you have the most stunning views over the Picos region.
