I am priveledged to serve on the board of directors for the International Association of Professional Security Consultants, an organization whose members are dedicated to furthering the advancement in the field of security.

One initiative that I am particularly excited about is our Evidence Based Practices Committee which sponsors research into solutions for some of today’s most significant security and violence prevention issues. The latest research published through this project, The Effectiveness of School Security Measures on School Shooting Incidents, evaluates exisiting studies of various measures used to improve school security and their effect on the prevention of school shootings. Hopefully this research, along with the ANSI School Security Standard under development by ASIS International will help focus the conversation on how we keep our children safe.

Are you going to be in Dallas for ASIS International next week?

If you plan to attend make sure that you save time to meet-up with other school security community members and attend some of the great events we have planned. A society's most valuable assets are its children, but in spite of this we hear time and time again of horrific incidents that place our children in danger in their schools. How do the risks faced by children differ from one country to another, what steps are societies taking to protect their children while they are in school, and how can we improve the security of our children by sharing best practices globally? A global panel of experts from the ASIS School Safety and Security Community will discuss these questions and more.

ASIS recently signed on with several other industry leading organizations to come out in opposition to potential changes the building codes in the State of Virginia to allow the use of door barricade devices in public buildings. This directly aligns with the informational video produced by the School Safety and Security Community speaking to our concerns with these devices which are being heavily promoted in the media.

Seven security organizations, including ASIS International and the National Association of State Fire Marshals, have sent a letter to Virginia legislature concerning conflicts of interest in a study group focusing on the use of active shooter prevention hardware in public buildings.

Seeking volunteers!

The School Safety & Security Community is happy to announce that we will be hosting the first ever "Global State of School Security" panel discussion at ASIS GSX in Atlanta, GA USA in September of 2022.

Our hope is to have 3-4 volunteers from this community serve as panelists to discuss the current threat landscape and security challenges for schools in their country/region. The format will involve a member of the Steering Committee leadership team serving as the moderator and asking each of the panelists questions related to the topic. We will identify these question prior to the session and make certain that everyone has an opportunity to practice and craft how they will respond prior to being on stage.

If you are responsible for providing security for schools or universities and plan to be at GSX in Atlanta we would love to have you participate as a panelist. Due to the usual focus of the Community on security issues for schools in the US, we are particularly interested in volunteers who represent schools in other regions of the world for this presentation. We are also open to panelists who may not be directly employed by a school or university but who have extensive knowledge of the security concerns for schools in one or more regions based on providing services to schools in those locations.

We are working with ASIS and there will likely be a discount on conference registration provided for panelists, and panelists will earn 3 CPE toward recertification of their ASIS certifications.

To apply to serve as a panelist please e-mail me ([email protected]) by May 15th 2022 and provide the following information:

Your name
Your employer
Your location, and region(s) where you have provided security for schools.
Description of how you are involved in providing security for schools
List or presentations you have given or articles you have published (if any)

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Once we have all of the applications the School Safety & Security Steering Committee leadership team will review the applications, determine the 3-4 panelists that we feel will offer the most interesting perspectives, and notify everyone who has applied of our decision at or before the June Community Meeting.

I look forward to hearing from all of you, and seeing many of you at GSX!

Today is the last day to submit your speaking proposals for GSX 2022 in Atlanta in September. We are hoping to have a robust School Security track at this year's conference so I encourage anyone who has a topic that they are passionate about or a case study related to school safety and security to submit an application to speak.

Also be sure to reach out to either myself or Rick Gilbert to let us know of your submission so we can have the School Safety & Security Steering Committee endorse your proposal which should give it a better chance of being accepted.

The link for submissions is here:
