The Story of Osiris, Isis and Horus
Long ago, according to ancient Egyptian mythology, the world was ruled by Osiris, a wise and just king. He taught the Egyptian people how to farm, respect the laws, and live in peace.
His brother Seth was jealous of him. Seth wanted the throne for himself, so he made a beautiful wooden chest exactly the size of Osiris' body. During a great feast, Seth promised to give the chest to whoever fit inside it perfectly. When Osiris lay down inside, Seth and his followers slammed the lid shut, sealed it, and threw the chest into the Nile.
The current carried the chest all the way to Byblos in present-day Lebanon, where it became trapped inside a great tamarisk tree. The king of Byblos admired the tree and used it as a pillar in his palace.
Osiris' faithful wife Isis searched everywhere for her husband. After a long journey, she arrived in Byblos, recovered the chest, and brought Osiris' body back to Egypt.
But Seth discovered the body again. Furious, he cut Osiris into pieces and scattered them across Egypt. Isis, helped by her sister Nephthys and the jackal god Anubis, searched for every piece. They found almost all of them. Anubis wrapped the body in linen, creating the first mummy.
Using her magical powers, Isis brought Osiris back to life for a short time. During that moment, she conceived a son, Horus.
Osiris did not return to rule the world of the living. Instead, he became the King of the Underworld and the judge of the dead.
Isis secretly raised Horus in the marshes of the Nile Delta until he became a strong young man. Horus then challenged Seth to reclaim his father's throne. After many battles, Horus was declared the rightful king of Egypt, while Osiris continued his eternal reign over the afterlife.
For the ancient Egyptians, this story symbolized the victory of good over evil, order over chaos, and the belief that life continues after death.
