Part 5:
Our next scouting trip was to the Yucatan in Mexico. Remembering our luck with local
recommendations for places to visit from teachers and students in Colombia, we
signed up for a week of Spanish immersion at the Meztli School in Tulum.

And once again, we were given some fantastic tips. Some highlights include Valladolid, Campeche and Bacalar. We discovered our love of cenotes and Jay continued his quest for hot chili pepper sauce and lamb tacos. We had an amazing time. And though it often felt more like a place to vacation than to live, it was still a contender.

So, after a month in the Yucatan, Mexico was also put on our short list and we hopped
a bus south to our next stop – Guatemala.

Part 4: Something very important about long term travel is that you have to stay flexible. You have to accept that something will go wrong, especially if you don’t speak the language of wherever you are. And you have to expect the unexpected. So when we planned our first exploratory trip to Colombia, we wanted to keep all of that in mind.

We started our trip in Bogota for two weeks of immersive Spanish at the Whee School.
We made no plans after that as we wanted to talk to people to get ideas about where to look. We got some great tips from teachers and students alike and explored Colombia as far south as Cali and as far north as the Caribbean with many stops between.

Though there is much of the country we did not visit, we felt we learned a great deal about how diverse Colombia can be. Caribbean Colombia and the Cafetera (Filandia, Jardin, and Solento) are almost two different countries. Bogota and Medellin have completely different feels.
Personally, I fell in love with the cafetera region and it was immediately put on my short list.

So we stayed flexible and found the unexpected. And of course, things went wrong:
bug bites, a gnarly spider bite, getting on the wrong bus, getting off at the wrong bus
stop, not having enough cash with no ATM in sight, food poisoning, a broken toe, altitude sickness. But, all that being said, I wouldn’t trade my time in Colombia for anything! In short, we loved Colombia and it was a contender. But, there were so many other countries we wanted to visit before making a decision. Next up – Mexico.

Part 3: This is a bit of a detour.

Jay spent many years building up an optometry practice from ground zero (when he
sold it, it was number one on yelp). What this meant was that he had very little time
for anything else including friends and family. So the first stop on our crazy trek
together was actually Australia where his brother lives with his wife and 3 boys.

Jay hadn’t seen his nephews since they were quite young. I had always wanted to visit
Australia, so he hardly had to talk me into this detour. We stopped in Hawaii for a
few days there and back and spent a month in Australia. What an amazing way to
start our travels! I will let these photos tell the rest of this part of our story. We’ll get
back to our beach hostel search next week.

Series: How did a couple of Americanos come to own and run a rural hotel in Galicia, Spain?

Part 2:
With our hopes of opening a beach hostel in Nicaragua quickly fading, we were faced with the question “now what” It seemed like we had a lot of options. Too many options. So we decided to narrow our search to a Latin American beach with amazing sunsets. We love sunsets and have been fortunate enough to watch some spectacular ones around the globe. We enjoy Latin American culture and food and Jay has always wanted to become fluent in Spanish. I speak French and German, but was open to adding another language to my travel bag. So, while Jay set about selling his business, my sister and I moved our travel plans to Ecuador. Why Ecuador? I had a friend who was considering moving there a couple of years earlier and I heard it was a great place to learn Spanish. Curious, I had spent a week solo at a beach hostel in Montanita in 2016 and had a fantastic time. I was eager to see more of the country. My sister wanted to explore the Amazon, so in July 2018 we met in Quito and made our way to the Amazon for a couple of weeks. After she left, I spent the next two weeks exploring the coast from Mompiche to Montanita on my own. I had an amazing trip and spoke with many travelers and hotel owners and got a lot of great advice. But the one thing I kept hearing over and over was: You should check out Colombia. You may not find your sunset beach, but you may find something you weren't expecting. So though I really did enjoy Ecuador, I was open to exploring other places. By the time I got home, Jay's business was sold and I was eager to see what everyone was talking about.
1. Beautiful walk to nab this pic in Quito.
2. Contemplating the universe with my sister in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
3. Los Frailes on the coast of Ecuador.
4. Blue footed bo***es in Isla de la Plata.
5. Isla de la Plata - the poor man's Galapagos 🇪🇨
