🦟 Mosquitoes in Menorca – a few simple tips to help you enjoy your holiday
Like many beautiful Mediterranean destinations, Menorca has mosquitoes, particularly around sunrise, sunset and after warm, still evenings. The good news is that a few simple precautions can make a big difference.
☀️ Wear light-coloured clothing – mosquitoes are more attracted to dark colours, so pale, loose-fitting clothing is a great choice for evenings.
👕 Cover up after sunset – a lightweight long-sleeved shirt or trousers can help if you’re dining outside or taking an evening stroll.
🌸 Go easy on strong perfumes and heavily scented lotions – sweet floral fragrances can attract mosquitoes, so a lighter fragrance is often the better option.
🧴 Use a good insect repellent – products containing DEET, icaridin (also called picaridin) or PMD offer excellent protection. Apply it before heading out in the evening and reapply as directed.
💨 Enjoy the breeze – mosquitoes aren’t strong flyers, so sitting near a fan or where there’s a gentle sea breeze can help keep them away.
💊 A little holiday tip: It can be worth packing some antihistamines or insect bite cream in your suitcase. Unlike in the UK, these are usually only available from pharmacies in Spain, and while there are pharmacies across the island, their opening hours may not always be convenient if you suddenly need something late in the evening or on a Sunday.
✨ Don’t let the odd mosquito put you off. Most visitors have no problems at all, and with a little preparation you’ll be free to enjoy those warm Menorcan evenings, beachside dinners and spectacular sunsets.
