Growing grapes on a dry and windy volcanic island requires a little ingenuity. In La Geria, each vine is planted in a deep hollow dug through the black volcanic ash to reach the fertile soil below.

The volcanic gravel, known locally as *picón*, helps retain precious moisture, while the semicircular stone walls protect the vines from Lanzarote’s strong winds.

The result is not only a unique wine-growing method, but also one of the island’s most extraordinary landscapes.
