Sant Jaume takes its name from the street, and the street from the church at its end — one of the oldest parish churches in Palma, its foundations dated to 1247, gothic and single-naved, built when Jaume I still ruled the kingdom it’s named for. Just across from it stands Santa Magdalena, where the clothed remains of Santa Catalina Thomàs — Mallorca’s own Beata — have rested since the 16th century.

Can Alomar stands at Passeig del Born, Palma’s most storied boulevard — a neo-Gothic palacete completed in the final decades of the 19th century, replacing a noble house that had stood on the same ground for three centuries. Pere Alomar, who made his fortune in Puerto Rico, bought the finished building and gave it his name — and something of that pride still shows in detail, if you know where to look. His family held it until 1972.
The boulevard around it has since filled with fashion houses and art galleries. Can Alomar was here before any of them.
