Rocamadour is one of the most remarkable villages in France.

Some friends recently visited these caves, new one's for us but looks impressive and only about an hours drive from Cales Retreat.

Named « Crystal Cathedral » for its huge underground vault adorned with a multitude of concretions the Gouffre de Proumeyssac is transformed this year into « Cathedral of Lights ».

Rocamadour in the Lot clings to a cliff face 150 metres above the Alzou canyon gorge in a vertical arrangement of chapels, the Bishop’s Palace, and the village itself stacked one above the other against the limestone cliff.

The extraordinary pilgrimage site has drawn visitors since the 12th century.

The lower village and the chapels are freely accessible and the cliff lift costs around 3 euros.

Those who arrive at Rocamadour on foot along the ancient pilgrimage path from the plateau above and see the extraordinary cliff village emerging below them in the gorge describe it as the most dramatically vertical and most completely extraordinary medieval village approach available anywhere in France.

We had a nice Sunday lunch at Capricorne Saint-Sozy. Great food & service, the restaurant was full of locals which is always a good sign, but I imagine equally appealing to tourists in the summer given its location near the Dordogne.
