Making hay while the sun shines. The neighbor's field is an occasional source of entertainment at LaLande.

Even on a bleak day in January the view from La Suite at La Lande is tranquil. It would be a treat to share it with you.

Room With A View
by Dan Dullaghan 3 May 2024

Our south-facing bedroom window
is a treat for the eye in Spring
From there one can see…
A red geranium window box budding with color
A carmine climber rose clinging to its wire wall mount
A delicate, split-leaved acer in its annual opening act
And a harlequin Willow with its pink-tips
Some cheery yellow celandine creeping below
An aged apple with flowered branches that shelters
My potting table made of an up-cycled barn door
A globe shaped red robin stands above a
Healthy trio of neatly trimmed Cottoneaster bushes
Above a clump of emerging yellow-violet iris
Anchored by a low, ivy-covered stone wall
The constant backdrop for pots of vibrant azalea
Interrupted by a pale green garden gate
Leading to a massive, shiny-leaved bay laurel
Inviting the eye beyond to a lush, young spruce
And a tiny, white-budded mountain ash underlaid by lawn
Shoulder to shoulder with a volunteer wild cherry
And a clump of native, hedge-row oaks
There is a recently acquired burgundy-flowering magnolia
At the edge of a small, freshly turned potager
Ready to host its annual crop of beans, beets and courgettes
All framed by an open field, just plowed and smoothed
Ready for its dressing of corn or wheat or clover
Inviting the neighbor’s beefy cows to browse amidst
A flock of ground-pecking chickens who will provide
A welcome supply of eggs and Sunday roasts
To be shared with distant-but-close neighbors
This, is what I see.
