🌿 A couple of hours in the woods can do you good.
There's something satisfying about spending time outdoors doing something practical.
No screens.
No pressure to be productive.
No need to be an expert.
Just a few hours of fresh air, woodland, friendly conversation and doing something that makes a difference.
That's what our volunteer session, Fettle, Kettle & Cake is all about.
Every other Tuesday we get together from 12.30–3pm to tackle whatever woodland jobs need doing.
Sometimes it's hard graft. Sometimes it's a quieter job. Sometimes we're learning something new together.
And then comes the important bit…
🫖 The fire gets lit and the kettle goes on.
🍰 The cake comes out.
💬 We sit down and have a chat.
Our group is usually only 6–8 people, with regular volunteers alongside people who pop in occasionally or come along for the first time.
There's no commitment to attend every session. Come when you can.
We ask for a small suggested donation of £1–2 towards drinks, and we're always happy to receive cake instead!
If you'd like to spend a little more time outdoors, meet some lovely people and help care for Shining Cliff, we'd love to welcome you.

Thinking ahead to next year....

Take a look at our availability as we are already all booked up for weekends next March, and there is limited availability left in April and June.

We just offer sole use at weekends, and a minimum 2 night Friday& Saturday stay.

The hostel accommodates up to 20 people in 5 bedrooms (all bunk beds). There are 3 bathrooms, all with showers and modern composting toilets (we are now trialling a bathroom clean and toilet change for all bookings on Saturday mornings). There is a great self-catering kitchen, and stunning outdoor gathering circle with stone seating around the fire pit. You can also add hire of the Beech Hut for just £10/day to your booking, this provides another break-out space to use, plus the Gathering Circle with bench seating, fire pit and mud kitchen.

Sole use for the weekend is £700 (or £720 if you add the Beech Hut to your booking).

Don't forget you can book your own private bedroom and bathroom (not ensuite) from Sunday - Thursday for just £25/person/night and £15/child/night, or you can hire the hostel for the day from 10am-4pm for £90.

It was lovely to walk past the Beech Hut gathering circle last weekend and hear children exploring and playing joyfully.
Although we offer fabulous birthday parties with Connections , it's also a great space to run your own small celebration, with the fire pit, barbecue, Beech Hut for storing kit and using if the weather isn't great, and toilet, all for just £10-£25 depending on group size, from 10am-4pm.

Little things that go on behind the scenes to try and make your hostel stay or Beech Hut hire as smooth as possible…the wheelbarrows get serviced each month, oiling the locks and nuts, making sure they’ve all got ropes to lash belongings down with, checking the tyres are ready to work hard; generally making sure they are in good working order for your arrival 😊

🌳 So, what's changing for 2027?
We've kept our price changes deliberately modest.
Our weekend sole-use rate is moving from £325 to £350 per night.
For weekday sole use:
• 1–6 people: £200
• 7–12 people: £275
• 13–20 people: £300
Our individual room rates remain £25 per adult and £15 per child.
Day hire remains £90, and our Beech Hut stays deliberately affordable at £10–£25 depending on group size.
Why haven't we simply increased everything?
Because that's not what Shining Cliff is about.
We want to cover our costs, pay people fairly and keep the hostel accessible — not maximise what we can charge.
🌿 Affordable. Sustainable. Independent.
That's the balance we're trying to find.

Thanks to our volunteers at Fettle, Kettle & cake and I’ve just discovered that chestnuts don’t have to be cooked first to be enjoyed.
After some testing, the bizarre dry mouth sensation is lessened if you peel off a very thin top layer of the chestnut.
With the swathes of chestnuts thickly covering the hostel footpath, I’m now feasting as I walk - they are just as fantastic as bananas, as they also come in their own protective packaging!
Google suggests avoid if pregnant or got liver/kidney problems, and don’t eat in large quantities- but that would be challenging as it takes too much time to peel and chew!

We really value reviews, as it gives people a fair idea of what the hostel is like from the guests viewpoint.
We get the option to hide 'bad' reviews, but we publish them all - oh, except one, where the written review was fabulous but they put the score the wrong way round, with 1 being excellent....
I love that these guests have taken the time to give great suggestions of places to go, but the typo about the toilets made me smile, they are 'composting' toilets but are very definitely not 'combustable' toilets!

Loving these Autumnal mornings!
Down by the River Derwent it’s clear but feels darker than normal for this time of day, but a short (&steep!) walk uphill takes you into the clouds.
Loving how the path stile looks as though you’re going to enter a new, mysterious realm! 🤩🍂🍁

I’m not superstitious but it’s the 13th and National Grid turned the power off all day without warning, thank goodness for an understanding hostel group🤦‍♀️😳🫣
And I forgot to put ropes in the hostel car to transport a load of poles for deadwood hedge building today on the roof rack, that made for an interesting bit of problem solving 🤔
Still not superstitious, but perhaps I shouldn’t have walked under the hostel loft ladder multiple times yesterday 😂
