We’re all set for the Perseid Meteor Shower tonight. Blankets ready, hot chocolate brewing and an amazingly clear night. With no light pollution, the camping grounds are a magical place for stargazing. Thanks to Hellen Challand for these amazing photos from last year.

It’s another busy weekend at the camping grounds. We are once again fully booked and it’s looking like a lovely clear night for campfires. We’re now fully booked for the weekends for the rest of the summer, but we still have plenty of space if you wanted to sn**ch a sneaky peaceful midweek break.

We were delighted to host a training day yesterday for Manifold Community Action for Nature. This is a group of local individuals who have come together to protect the river and the surrounding valley.

We spent the day learning how to do river fly testing. This is once of the easiest ways to gauge the health of the river, by collecting and counting fly larvae.
A completely fascinating day and if you’re lucky, when you come to stay in the summer I may get my net out and introduce you to some of our creepy crawlies!

A bit of local knowledge goes a long way. When people think of Peak District stepping stones, they often head down to Dove Dale which is always heaving with crowds of visitors. A much more exciting (and quieter) walk takes you along the Monsal Trail, then down to the river Wye and the stepping stones at Chee Dale. It’s a scrambly adventure where you never know what’s around the next corner.

One of our favourite walks takes you to Luds Church. It has a bit of everything; a gentle climb through the lush green forest, breathtaking views, and one of the greatest natural hiding places in the Peak District.

As the sun has finally come out, our thoughts are turning to warmer days. We have a series of guided walks for our campers to enjoy, many on our doorstep, some just a short drive away. With so many amazing places to explore, I thought I’d revisit a few over the next couple of days.

Just a couple of miles away is Thors Cave - the cave of the Thunder God! ‘Towering high over the Manifold Valley rises a vertical gleaming wall of limestone rock, and centre stage is the vast gaping mouth of Thors Cave.’
