I was very exited to see what I'm pretty sure was a Pine Marten the other day, just a few minutes from home near Ausewell wood. Great news they are doing so well on Dartmoor.

Stunning photograph capturing a classic Dartmoor moment.

There are mornings on Dartmoor when everything seems to come together for just a few fleeting moments.

As the first light broke through the clouds, this beautiful grey Dartmoor pony stood high on Chinkwell Tor, taking in the cool breeze while the iconic silhouette of Hound Tor watched over the landscape beyond.

What drew me to the scene was the contrast. The dark, brooding sky hinted at another passing shower, yet a shaft of soft morning light found its way through the clouds, illuminating the pony and making it stand out against the moor behind.

Moments like this never last for long on Dartmoor. The light changes, the clouds roll through and the scene disappears as quickly as it arrived. But for a few seconds everything aligned perfectly.

Beyond the beauty of the landscape, native Dartmoor ponies continue to play an important role in shaping these habitats through conservation grazing. Their presence helps maintain the rich mosaic of vegetation that supports wildlife, biodiversity and the character of the moor itself.

It was a scorching bank holiday weekend but our lotus belle has insulation to keep the heat down and the little woodland around the tent has plenty of shade. Our guests left us a lovely review on Hipcamp (link in the comments), describing the stay as peaceful and secluded. They particularly enjoyed the clear skies and nature immersion. They even saw a stag close up! We're taking bookings now for the rest of the summer.

We very much support Devon Wildlife Trust in their work to help endangered species. At Moorland Holt we’re lucky to be living immersed in the Dartmoor landscape and get to see rare species nearby. We heard our first cuckoo the other day, a little late this year. We’ve yet to glimpse a pine marten but they could soon be at Ausewell woods just down the road, one of Dartmoor’s unique temperate rainforests.

A mini break at Moorland Holt (Dartmoor) is a great way to boost your nature time, immersed in a private woodland glade adjoining open moor in a luxury lotus belle tent. The dawn chorus is glorious at the moment. You can find our listing on Hipcamp but PM for a £10 per night discount.

What a day! The lotus belle is up at Moorland Holt, we heard the first cuckoo in the glade and a fellow dog walker reported seeing an adder. And this little chap came to say hello.
