THE MORPURGO MASTERPIECE LIVE ON STAGE!

From the legendary storyteller behind War Horse comes Private Peaceful – an unforgettable story of family, first love and the devastating human cost of war.

Few writers have introduced more young people to the power of storytelling than Sir Michael Morpurgo. The former Children’s Laureate and author of War Horse, Kensuke’s Kingdom and The Butterfly Lion has spent a lifetime turning enormous moments in history into deeply personal human stories.

Private Peaceful, at Blackpool Grand Theatre from Monday 1 to Wednesday 3 February 2027, is one of his most powerful.

Tommo Peaceful is a young soldier spending one final night looking back over his life. As the hours move relentlessly towards morning, he remembers the warmth of home, his childhood, the innocence of first love and the unbreakable bond he shares with his older brother Charlie. Those memories eventually lead from the fields of rural Devon to the mud, fear and brutality of the First World War.

If War Horse revealed the conflict through a horse separated from the boy who loves him, Private Peaceful takes audiences inside the mind of one young soldier. It strips away the vast scale of war to reveal the individual lives, relationships and futures caught in its path.

The result is both heartwarming and heartbreaking: a story filled with humour, tenderness and the joy of being alive, but shadowed by the knowledge that time is running out.

Adapted and directed by Simon Reade, this acclaimed production places Tommo’s entire world in the hands of one remarkable performer.

Making his professional debut, Bristol Old Vic Theatre School graduate Benjamin Cain conjures a complete landscape of family members, soldiers, memories and emotions alone on stage.
There are no huge battle scenes to distance us from the story. Instead, one actor and Morpurgo’s extraordinary words transform the stage into childhood adventures, family arguments, young love and the terrifying reality of the trenches.
That simplicity gives the production its power.

Tommo is not a name carved into a memorial or one figure among millions. He becomes a son, a brother and a young man whose life matters.
Suitable for audiences aged nine and over, Private Peaceful is an exceptional opportunity for families and young people to experience one of Britain’s greatest living storytellers brought vividly to life. It opens conversations about courage, loyalty, injustice and war, but never feels like a history lesson. First and foremost, it is gripping theatre.

Suitable for audiences aged nine and over, Private Peaceful is one of Michael Morpurgo’s most extraordinary and unforgettable stories - and for three nights only, Blackpool audiences can experience its full emotional force live on stage. Moving from the joy and innocence of childhood to the devastating reality of war, it is a story of love, courage, loyalty and injustice that grips from its opening moments and refuses to let go. Powerful, urgent and deeply human, this is not simply an important story for families and young people; it is an unmissable piece of theatre that will stay with audiences long after the final curtain.

Private Peaceful is at Blackpool Grand Theatre from Monday 1 to Wednesday 3 February 2027, with performances at 7pm.

Tickets start from £18, Schools all seats £15 (Free teacher ticket per 10 student tickets purchased). Book tickets on the Blackpool Grand Theatre website or call 01253 290190.

A Play About Joy Division & Manchester

New Dawn Fades – A Play About Joy Division And Manchester returns with a scintillating new production touring the UK in 2026.

The play tells the story of four ordinary lads who, inspired by the punk revolution of 1970s Manchester, came together to form one of the most influential bands of all time, Joy Division.

Following the untimely death of lead singer Ian Curtis, the band went on to huge world-wide success as New Order.

For 2026, New Dawn Fades reunites the creative team from last year’s sell-out tour, with producers NIGEL CARR and TONY DAVIDSON.

It is written by the award-winning BRIAN GORMAN, who received much praise for his portrayal of Factory Records boss Tony Wilson.

He guides the audience through the heart and soul of both the band and the city, introducing historical figures, including Roman General, Julius Agricola, Dr John Dee, Friedrich Engels, Paul Morley, and Pete Shelley of Buzzcocks!

The result is a spellbinding journey of love, passion, grief, and of course music, drawing inspiration from the enigmatic lyrics of Ian Curtis, with a soundtrack featuring iconic hits of the late 1970’s UK music scene, including of course Joy Division.

The play is directed by Brian Gorman and Lauren Greenwood, who reprises her role as Debbie Curtis.

A smash hit when it debuted at the Greater Manchester Fringe Festival in July 2013, New Dawn Fades has continued to wow audiences across the country, playing to capacity crowds and standing ovations.
