“A wonderful weekend for a large group of friends

We stayed at Chettle Lodge for a weekend away with six families — a real mix of couples with kids, couples without, and one of us flying solo — totalling 11 adults, 4 teenagers and 3 children. Check-in was a smooth 4pm on Friday and check-out an easy 11am on Sunday, giving us a full three days to properly settle in and enjoy the place. Finding a property that could comfortably and stylishly bring together such a varied group isn’t easy, and this house delivered on every front.

The house itself, a former hotel, has bags of character and history that you simply don’t get with a purpose-built holiday let. It’s spacious throughout, with a fantastic bar area that became the natural hub for evening drinks, and a big kitchen and utility room that made catering for such a large group genuinely easy. We ran a game of Traitors, inspired by the TV show, across the whole three days, and the house turned out to be the perfect setting for it — plenty of nooks for scheming, a grand dining space for the round-table moments, and just the right atmosphere of intrigue from Friday evening right through to Sunday morning.

The bedrooms were a real highlight — we loved the four-poster bed in particular — and every room having its own ensuite made mornings with a full house completely stress-free. Hot water for showers was instant, even with everyone getting ready at once.

The grounds were perfect for the kids and teens to burn off energy with football and other games, and the setting really is idyllic — the village is quiet, picturesque, and a lovely contrast to everyday life. We’d also recommend a visit to the local village store, which stocks a beautiful range of locally produced, organic goods. Yes, it’s pricier than the supermarket, but it’s clearly supporting the local community, and the coffee, pastries and sausage rolls were all delicious….”

Ah the summer in this house. Glorious. We are empty next weekend (Fri 24th - Sun 26th) after a cancellation and then not being able to rebook it… Anyone fancy taking it for the day and / or night for a party?! Garden party? Rave up in the oak room? Cool dip in the hot tub? Any other suggestions…?

One of our lovely Chettle Village Store customers (and now Chettle Lodge guests) painted us a picture of the flower and shrub filled bank at Chettle Village Store as you look at it from the car park, for free too.

We are just waiting for it to be framed before it goes up. I love people’s generosity and kindness. Makes my heart swell and give me hope.

❤️

I’d never noticed what this cushion looks like…. 😂Willing to do a deal to fill this final summer date. Any takers?

Chettle Lodge gardens are looking so green and inviting at the moment with all this May sunshine.

We had a wonderful gardener, Jan, who was part of the team since the beginning in 1996, she did all the flower borders and general weeding. We haven’t done anything to the flower and shrub areas round the edges since we shut The Castleman Hotel & Restaurant in Oct ‘22!! But because she’d done such a great job over the years it’s held up well from us neglecting it.

Luckily we still have June, who was the restaurants veg grower, lawn mower and pruner and still does the lawn mowing and pruning, despite being 84 years ‘old’. Luckily she doesn’t have social media so she won’t know I’m revealing her age to the world. She’s the fittest 84 year old I’ve met and a legend who only wears pink and purple and occasionally blue.

As always, thanks to all the amazing ladies of Chettle, past and present, for always showing up, and doing a good job. 💪🙌🥰

We only have 3 empty weekends left between now and the end of summer. And Christmas 🎄 is still not confirmed. I have lots of people wanting 3 nights but I need 4 nights to make December work for us.

(Free weekends - 24th-26th July, 7th-9th Aug, 14th-16th Aug)
