Hi Everyone,

This is a great time to come to Brighton now that the crowds of summer students have gone and the weather is getting crisper. Brighton is full of gorgeous pubs serving great food and many will be lighting their fires soon for cosy night and Sunday afternoons. Check out the Prince Albert (Vegetarian) https://princealbertbrighton.co.uk/, Prince George http://www.princegeorge.pub/, Hop Poles http://www.hoppoles.pub/, The Dorset https://www.thedorset.co.uk/ and the Walrus https://www.thewalrusbrighton.com/. All these lovely pub are in and around the Brighton Laines, they're my personal favourites and I hope you'll like them too!

This month is all about comedy with the annual Brighton Dome Comedy Festival taking place throughout October and attracting some of the biggest names in stand up https://brightondome.org/whats_on/comedy/. Just around the corner from Brighton Dome is also the best comedy club in the south - The Komedia which has shows on all through the week and the famous Krater stand up shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday https://www.komedia.co.uk/brighton/. These feature 4-5 comedians (including a resident Host) and you may well see someone who on TV very soon. Many big names have started here and if you're able to go on Sunday you can currently bag yourself half price tickets with Groupon up to the 24th of November https://www.groupon.co.uk/deals/gl-komedia-brighton-16.

There's so much to see and do in Brighton that walking is usually the best way (also parking is very expensive!) but cycling is great too and there are lots of excellent cycle paths around the city including a wide one running the whole length of the seafront. You can easily hire a bike for a day, an afternoon or even just an hour with the Brighton Bike system and there are collection/drop off points all around the city https://www.brightonbeachbikes.co.uk/.

Lastly, it's not long now until Hallowe'en and Bonfire Night and Brighton does love to celebrate these things and if you are lucky enough to be in the city on the 21st of December you will get to see the Burning of the Clocks. This is featured on international websites as one of the best times to be in England https://rove.me/to/england/burning-the-clocks. It's a celebration of the winter solstice and an alternative to the commercialisation and over consumption many have concerns about with Christmas. It's a beautiful candlelit parade using handmade willow and paper lanterns culminating in the being burnt at the seafront and a large firework display that can be seen for miles. It's inclusive, secular and non-superstitious - evreything that Brighton is about really!

Have a great time

Katharine

Hello Everyone

I hope you will all be having a great sunny time on the Pier and the beach this month. The Luna Beach Cinema is back with a great programme of films on a huge screen on the beach including Mama Mia, The Greatest Showman, A Star is Born and of course - Grease! https://lunabeachcinema.com/.

There’s also a great open air theatre scene in Brighton and BOAT (Brighton Open Air Theatre) have a wide range of fabulous shows going on throughout the summer including Wind in the Willows, The Mill on the Floss, The Comedy of Errors, Alice in Wonderland and lots of others https://www.brightonopenairtheatre.co.uk/whats-on/.

If you are having a private party or fancy a special day with your loved one and would like to use my Beach Hut remember that guests staying in my apartments are entitled to a discounted rate of £50 per day at weekends and £35 per day Mon-Fri. This gives you a discount of £30. Bookings can also be made via Holiday lettings/TripAdvisor and photos are on this facebook site.

My new favourite restaurant this month is Moshimo which a friend took me too last week. It serves a wide range of Japanese food including sushi, ramen and japanese tapas. I’ve just got back from Japan and Moshimo is the real deal - beautiful food full of flavour in a gorgeous setting with great service. There’s lots of vegetarian and vegan dishes and a new wine list which we enjoyed trying out! If you fancy going, do book as it gets busy - we went on a Monday night and it was packed https://www.moshimo.co.uk/.

If you’re looking for a great cafe for lunch head to Social Board on St James Street, it’s new and hipster in the best way and everything tastes great https://socialboardbrighton.com/. The sandwiches are huge, delicious and so complicated that you would never make anything so crazy and delicious at home. The coffee is also very nice!

If you’re after a cheap midweek pizza though check out Opposition in the Laines. They are currently offering a deal on Groupon for 2 pizzas and 2 beers for £7!!! The pizzas are huge and I have no idea how this can be an effective business model but it really is a great deal (check out the T’s & C’s on Groupon, you do need to book but this is easy to do online using their booking tool) https://www.groupon.co.uk/deals/opposition-italian-restaurant-1.

Hope you have a great time in Brighton and thank you for coming to stay!

The UK’s most exciting open-air cinema experience comes to Brighton Beach for a month-long residency this summer. Showing everything from this year’s biggest hitters such as A Star is Born and Bohemian Rhapsody.

Hi Everyone,

Well done for choosing to come to Brighton during the Festival and Fringe!! The city is buzzing with all sorts of shows and every available room seems to have been turned into a venue of some kind. Do try and catch at least one show whilst you are here as there really is something for eveyone. You can see the full listings at https://www.brightonfringe.org/ and https://brightonfestival.org/. Both sites allow you to search by date so you can see what’s on whilst you are in the city. There’s a huge mix of theatre, music, comedy and dance. Most shows are very inexpensive and some are free. The Speigletent will be up in Victoria Gardens and is surrounded by pop up bars and food stalls so do go along even if you just want to soak up the atmosphere with a beer in the sunshine.

Brighton is full of great pubs, most serving craft ales, delicious wines and food you will want to take your time over. Ones to look out for are the Prince George, Sidewinder, Lion & Lobster, White Rabbit, Willliam the Fourth, Miss Fitzherbert, and the Mesmerist which has a live band most nights. On Wednesday they have a Swing Band and you can get a quick lesson for beginners in Lindyhop in the room upstairs at 7.30. No need to book, have any experience or a partner! If you fancy a proper cocktail bar you will also be spoilt for choice, try Valentino’s which is just a few doors down from the Theatre Royal and has a balcony overlooking the Pavillion, Brown’s in the Laines (be aware that they have two premises - one’s a restaurant, one is a cocktail bar and they are very close to each other) and the Plotting Place which is tucked away behind St James Street and has the great advantage of accepting bookings so you can be sure to get a table even at busy times if you call them in advance.

Eating out in Brighton is really fun and there’s a huge variety of lovely restaurants to suit everyone. My lunchtime favourites are Foodilic which is all you can eat salads and hot dishes for less than £10, the Balcony cafe in the Laines, Bills and Social Board on St James Street which take the humble sandwich to the greatest possible heights! For dinner there is Food For Friends and Terre a Terre, both award winning vegetarian restaurants, Indian Summer, a beautiful and inventive take on the tastes of Southern India, and if you like Steak try the Salt Room. If you want to be right on the beach my advice is to head for Murmur Riddle & Finns, both use local seafood and pride themselves on the quality of their food.

Hope this all helps you to have a great time in Brighton!

Hello Everyone,

Spring is in the air and it’s a great time to get down to the beach or out to one of Brighton’s lovely parks. If you’re staying at Sussex Square you will be able to enjoy the flowers coming out in the magnificent Kemptown enclosures. If you are at Marine Parade or Upper Rock Gardens it’s only a short stroll to Queens Park and everyone is only a few minutes from the beach. There’s a wonderful walk under the cliffs from the Marina to Rottingdean and beyond, with cafes on the way and maybe a pub lunch at the end! We did this the other day and sat outside at the White Horse in Rottingdean to enjoy the view with Sunday Lunch - the food is maybe not up to the Brighton pub standard but worth going to for the location! This walk is along a wide well maintained walkway next to the sea wall and you can cycle it if you prefer using one of the Brighton Bikes that can be rented by the hour or day https://www.btnbikeshare.com/.

There’s always a good night out to be had at the Komedia which has stand up comedy shows every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night at their downstairs Krater shows. There’s a full bar and they do food you can eat at the table whilst watching the show. I have seen many comedian’s here who have gone onto become very successful and I first saw the Lost Voice Guy here - the first comedian to use a voice communication aid. He is incredibly funny and really an inspiration. I was delighted when he won Britain’s Got Talent and he is back at the Komedia doing his own show on the 16th and 17th of April. There are still a few tickets left at https://www.komedia.co.uk/brighton/comedy/lost-voice-guy-im-only-in-it-for-the-parking/. The last Thursday of every month hosts Comic Boom which features shorter sets from newer acts and is age 16+ (all the rest are 18+) so if you have teenagers with you that are aged 16 or 17 this is great to take them to. The last Saturday of each month features Funny Women: Brighton Nights which promotes an all female line up and the first Sunday of every month hosts Bent Double which promotes LGBT+ acts. Other events and shows take place through each week, a full line up is published at https://www.komedia.co.uk/brighton/.

My pub recommendation this month is the Prince Albert, just a few minutes from Brighton Station https://princealbertbrighton.co.uk. It has a band on upstairs almost every night and not just any band - they really get some great acts playing. It’s really independent, cool and quirky with great food and craft beers. It’s super friendly too!

Make sure you get out and about in the Laines whilst the sun is shining and stop into one of the very many cafes. Try something new, whether it’s swimming in the sea, seeing a new band or just ordering a different cake and smile at someone you’ve never met!

Have a great time

01/02/2019

Hi Everyone,

I’m starting to get excited for the Festival and Fringe - they take place in May and the whole city is full of small shows, most of which are incredible. My favourite last year was a one man show about Edith Piaf and I’m delighted to see that it’s coming back to the Rialto on the 19th, 27th and 28th. The Rialto is a lovely little theatre built and decorated in the Art Deco style and right in the centre of Brighton. It hosts a mix of theatre, comedy and music.
The major event in February/March though is happening at the Old Market Theatre who have a fantastic season of Reigning Women. This is a mini-festival aimed at giving a platform to the amazing women forming part of our contemporary arts scene. Expect comedy, columnists, photography and film. Rachel Paris, star of The Mash Report is already sold out but there are still tickets for most of the other shows There are so many shows by so many amazing women that there should be something for everyone! http://theoldmarket.com/reigning-women/.

Other small theatres that have wonderful productions, intimate spaces and low prices are the New Venture Theatre https://www.newventure.org.uk/what-s-on/range.listevents/- which is almost next door to the Lion and Lobster which is a great pub with a restaurant and The Brighton Little Theatre https://www.brightonlittletheatre.com/ which is a minute away from the Pull & Pump pub. They all have shows on throughout the year so do have a look at them as well as the wonderful Brighton Dome and Theatre Royal. Rialto events can be found at http://www.rialtotheatre.co.uk/ and those planning ahead for the Fringe can book tickets at https://www.brightonfringe.org/.

The last thing I should mention I suppose is Valentines Day! There are wonderful restaurants in Brighton - Food For Friends, Terre a Terre, Indian Summer, The Salt Room etc etc and if you want a table at one of these book quickly - Hopefully it will be a nice night though in which case I would suggest a ride on the waltzer at the end of the Pier with chips and champagne on the beach (maybe some doughnuts too - the ones they make freshly on the Pier are amazing!).

Have a great time,

Hello Everyone

Happy New Year!! Brighton has great vegetarian and vegan food on offer all year round but it really is the place to be for those trying out new healthy diets in the oddly named Veganuary! Head down to Terre a Terre https://terreaterre.co.uk/ and Food for Friends https://www.foodforfriends.com/ for the very best of beautiful and delicious vegetarian and vegan food.

The New Year has begun with some fantastic films being released and the best place to see them is the Duke of Yorks Cinema - one of the first purpose built cinemas to be built and the oldest surviving one. It’s gloriously restored with comfortable seats and sofas and there are bars upstairs and downstairs (like the theatres it was based on). I saw The Favourite there last weekend and I cannot recommend it highly enough - Olivia Coleman certainly deserves that Golden Globe! https://www.picturehouses.com/cinema/Duke_Of_Yorks/Whats_On As well as this, Collette is out now and Vice, Mary Queen of Scots and Beautiful Boy are all out in January. Don’t forget the other Dukes cinema at the Komedia as well - this has 2 screens and is in the middle of the Laines (not far from Food For Friends!) https://www.picturehouses.com/cinema/Dukes_At_Komedia.

January is the time for trying new things and if you are crafty you might want to check out the lovely Pottery Cafe on North Road. You can book classes to make and paint pottery or just drop in to paint something ready made. It will give you a great souvenir of your visit to Brighton. There are all sorts of artistic workshops in Brighton from sewing to chocolate making and everyone is very friendly to visitors. Have a look at www.visitbrighton.com for full details of what’s on in the city.

Have a great time

Hi Everyone,

Brighton is full of Christmas Sparkle and this is a great time to visit. The Laines are particularly beautiful when they are lit for Christmas and whilst The Royal Pavilion is lit every night of the year, it’s particularly spectacular in winter. The Ice Rink at the Royal Pavilion brings the Christmas magic and you can relax before and after with some mulled wine and snacks in the full bar they have to support the not so sporty! Tickets can be booked in advance and the skating continues on into the New Year https://royalpavilionicerink.co.uk/.

The Brighton Dome, housed in what was once the most spectacular stable block in the country, built for the horses of the Royal Pavilion, have a wonderful range of shows over the Christmas period. These include ballet, modern circus, carol concerts, and classical recitals and other music. They are showing the Snowman & Peter and the Wolf on Christmas Eve https://brightondome.org/event/18921/the_snowman_peter_and_the_wolf/. Also on Christmas Eve is a special showing of It’s A Wonderful Life and Dukes at the Komedia https://www.picturehouses.com/cinema/Dukes_At_Komedia - be quick if you want tickets, there’s only a few left and the 23rd has already sold out.

If you fancy a traditional panto, this year Brighton is hosting a lovely production of Peter Pan throughout December https://www.attenboroughcentre.com/events/1991/peter-pan/. Those seeking less traditional panto will be able to enjoy Big Dick Wittington https://www.thealternativepantobrighton.co.uk/ and Peter Pansy from the Brighton Original Alternative Panto https://www.facebook.com/BrightonPanto2/ - both coming up in the Spring.

The Brighton Komedia has a full range of fun, fabulous and crazy nights of music and comedy. There really is something to suit everyone and it’s a top Brighton night out. There’s three venues within the building and each has a full bar www.komedia.co.uk. The Friday and Saturday night Krater shows are running throughout the festive season giving a great night of stand up comedy of 4-5 acts each night with a resident host. You will be sat at tables where you can enjoy drinks and food but do arrive early to avoid sitting right at the front!

Do check out https://www.visitbrighton.com/things-to-do which has lots of detailed information about things to do in Brighton from graffiti tours to spas, local vineyards and breweries and lots of events.

Happy Christmas!

07/11/2018

Hello Everyone,

With bonfire night now behind us we can really start and the Christmas lights will be lit in Brighton on the 15th November. The Laines are a beautiful place at every time of the year but when they are lit for Christmas they really are magical. The Royal Pavilion is lit every night of the year and it particularly spectacular in winter when the nights draw in early so it can be enjoyed in the late afternoon as well as the evening. The Ice Rink at the Royal Pavilion has been fully installed and opens on the 7th November. Tickets can be booked in advance and the skating continues on into the New Year https://royalpavilionicerink.co.uk/.

The Pier is also gearing up for Christmas and is holding a Christmas Market on the 1-2 December. In November they are offering 25% all day wristbands giving you unlimited rides for the day. You need to book them online and you can do this and get details of their upcoming market at http://www.brightonpier.co.uk/events/whats-on/christmas-market. Details of other Christmas markets and events can be found at https://www.visitbrighton.com/inspire-me/holidays/christmas-and-new-year.

Other things happening in November include the Film Festival which continues until the 25th November. There are some amazing films being shown, many in advance of release dates next year. There’s something for everyone and they are mostly being shown at the Duke’s Picture Houses where you can enjoy a glass of wine or a local beer whilst you watch the film in comfortable seats! www.cine-city.co.ok.

At the Theatre Royal there is a great mix of shows on: ‘The Comedy About A Bank Robbery’ runs from the 13th-17th Nov. It’s from the creators of the hit West End comedy ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ and is currently on tour. After that, the theatre hosts a new play by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman called ‘Trial By Laughter’ based on the true story of William Hone, forgotten hero of free speech who was prosecuted for ‘impious blasphemy and seditious libel’! There is then a series on one night only shows including an audience with Simon Reeve on the 25th Nov, and nights featuring the performances about the songs and lives of Whitney Houston (29th), Elvis (30th) and ABBA (1st Dec).

Hope you have a great time!

29/10/2018

Hello Everyone

The whole of Brighton turns into a Hallowe’en party this week and most people will be in fancy dress most of the time! The weekend will of course bring fireworks which you can see for free over the Pier and Marina or go to one of the many arranged displays at the Neville, Cricket Ground or Preston Park for example. Most charge less if you book in advance and all have websites to do this.

November brings the Brighton Film Festival to the city which has expanded out to venues in Eastbourne, Lewes and Worthing. Brighton is well served with cinema with not only the usual Odeon and Cineworld but also the gorgeous Duke of Yorks, housed in one of the first and most beautiful buildings built to be a public cinema, now nearly 120 years old. It’s in Preston circus and well worth a visit. Dukes also have another cinema in Brighton above the Komedia in the Lanes and both can be easily spotted from the stripy legs high kicking from the top of the buildings! Other smaller venues are hosting a variety of films during the Festival and full details of all showing are at www.cine-city.co.uk. My favourites are literally ‘The Favourite’ starring Olivia Coleman and Emma Stone (2018) which is showing on the 9th Nov, ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me’ starring Melissa McCarthy and Richard E Grant (2018) showing on 10th Nov, 'Sorry to Bother You' on the 24th and the Japanese film ‘Shoplifters’ which is subtitled and showing on the 11th. All of these are showing at the Duke of York’s but there are many many other wonderful and unusual films so do try and see one.

The Autumn season continues at the Komedia itself with the monthly LGBTQ+ stand up collection that is Bent Double showing this Sunday the 4th of November. Krater shows on from Thursday-Sunday this week (2 on Saturday). These are stand up comedy shows, often with a headliner you will have seen on TV and with other maybe less well known acts, many of which you are likely to see making in big in the future. There’s a resident host who is also very funny and you will be seated on tables where you can order food and drinks from the bar. It’s a top Brighton night out with the Komedia regularly voted the best comedy venue in the South and attracting comedy talent from all around the world www.komedia.co.uk.

If you are getting out and about in the Lanes so stop in to see Gresham Blake’s new ranges for Men. Women and now Children too. Gresham’s are exclusive tailors in London and Brighton and offer a full range of high end tailoring and off the peg clothes. They are famous for their unusual and wacky patterns and colours and if you fancy a shirt or tie that attracts admiration and conversation when you get home, this is the place to go!

If you are looking for a restaurant to give you the full Brighton experience you can’t do better than Food For Friends and Terre a Terre which both specialise in vegetarian and vegan cooking in the most delicious, experimental and unusual dishes. My family love both - even the most dedicated meat eaters. Do have the sharing platter at Food for Friends - it says it’s for 2 but I think that must be for a lunch - it is plenty for 3-4 people as a starter. Everything on it is amazing and delicious.

Have a lovely week!
