Whimsy goes wild

I'm very excited about my new holiday cottage venture in Derbyshire, Whimsy by the Peaks. Not only is it a gorgeous stone cottage in a beautiful area, it's also in the "magical circle" of the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust's projects to help preserve and restore nature in the Peak District. There are around 30 reserves within an hour's drive of the house. It's brilliant!

You can add back a bit of wildness even to small urban gardens. At our holiday let in Derbyshire, we recently swapped a patchy front lawn with little wildlife appeal for a sunny seating area surrounded by bird and bug friendly bushes. Next steps – adding a shallow pond and nectar rich herbs.

Hurrah! Annwn Restaurant in Narbeth is now open. It's a fabulous venue offering a single menu changing during the seasons, shunning food miles in favor of local seasonal and locally foraged produce. They showcase Wales' wild ecosystems and the incredible quality and diversity of local sustainable producers. Well worth the 30 mins drive from Whimsy by the Sea.

Love the way Dr Benyon's Bug Farm look after local wildlife. It's a great place to visit if you're staying at our cabin (it's 15 mins drive). She makes a good point that simple structures like this can help mitigate the loss of old farm buildings.
