Who's the most Cornish person you know?
Maybe it's your nan, your mate, that guy who lives down the road. Maybe it's an influencer, a comedian, an artist. Maybe it's the Cornish Giant, an icon who guards the museum staircase.
Anthony Payne AKA ‘The Cornish Giant’ (circa 1612-1691) was 7 foot, 4 inches tall. He was the personal retainer to Sir Bevill Grenville, a leading Royalist and was present in the 1643 Battle of Lansdown, when Sir Bevill was killed. This painting was commissioned by Charles II, probably as a gift to Sir Bevill’s son, and shows Payne wearing the uniform of a Halberdier. He died at Stratton, near Bude, in the same house he was born.
Seamas Carey's 'One and All', featuring 'Who's The Most Cornish Person You Know', closes this Saturday 23 March, make sure to visit before we begin changing over to the next exhibition 🖼️
