It belongs to the Mullidae family and is primarily found in the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern Atlantic Ocean. Red mullets are prized for their firm yet flaky texture and are a popular choice in Mediterranean and European cuisines. Good evening fish lovers.

The Saturday market is rammed to the rafters with plenty of fish for you lovely people tomorrow, 7.30 am till 1.30 pm. Among the turbot, brill, seabass, lemon sole, fresh scallops and squid is the significantly cheaper Wrasse. Here are some interesting facts for you to sink your teeth into.

The Wrasse are a fascinating and diverse family of marine fish known for their bright colors and unique behaviors, belonging to the family Labridae. One of the most interesting aspects of wrasse is their role in the ecosystem as cleaner fish. Many species of wrasse, such as the cleaner wrasse, perform a crucial role in maintaining the health of other fish by removing parasites and dead skin from their surfaces. This mutualistic relationship benefits both the wrasse, who get a meal out of it, and the fish receiving the cleaning, by improving their health and reducing stress levels.

Moreover, wrasses exhibit a remarkable range of sizes and shapes, from the tiny cleaner wrasses, which are just a few centimeters long, to the Napoleon wrasse, which can grow up to 2 meters in length. Their life cycle also showcases an intriguing phenomenon known as sequential hermaphroditism. Many wrasse species are born as females and have the ability to transform into males as they mature or as social conditions within their group change. This adaptive strategy is not common in the animal kingdom and highlights the wrasse’s unique approach to reproduction and social structure.
