The guest was standing in front of me.

The booking was completely normal.

Nothing unusual on the reservation. Nothing that would have appeared as a warning on my screen.

And yet, something in me said:

“Slow down. This person needs something more than a quick check-in.”

So I did something very simple.

I stopped rushing.

I offered a cup of tea.
I listened.
I gave them time.

The next morning, the guest said something I have never forgotten:

“For the first time since I arrived, I felt safe.”

That one sentence taught me more about hospitality than many years of looking at spreadsheets.

Because behind every booking number is a human being.

And sometimes, the most important things in hospitality are the things our systems cannot measure.

We measure occupancy.

ADR.

Revenue.

Reviews.

Conversion.

Guest satisfaction.

Of course, these numbers matter. We are running businesses, after all.

But there is another kind of intelligence that doesn’t appear on a dashboard.

Intuition.

After years in hospitality, I have learned to listen to it.

Sometimes it tells you to spend five more minutes with a guest.

Sometimes it tells you that your team member needs encouragement rather than criticism.

Sometimes it tells you that a decision isn’t right, even when the numbers look promising.

And sometimes, it tells you that something needs to change.

I don’t believe intuition means ignoring data.

I believe it means combining data with experience, observation and human understanding.

Because hospitality is ultimately about people.

And perhaps one of our greatest competitive advantages isn’t another technology, another discount or another marketing strategy.

Perhaps it is something much simpler:

The ability to notice.

To notice the tired traveller.

The nervous first-time visitor.

The celebration hidden behind a booking.

The team member who needs to hear, “You’re doing well.”
