Let’s show some local love for Brough Castle! 🍃

Around one hour from High Gaitle, the dramatic ruins of Brough Castle sit high on a ridge overlooking the strategic Stainmore Pass, on the very site of an ancient Roman fort 🏰✨
Built around 1092, the original motte and bailey castle was repeatedly attacked by the Scots, and was destroyed in 1174 during the Great Revolt against Henry II. Conflict continued throughout the 12th century, leaving its mark on the region and the castle’s turbulent history.
One of the most famous events came in 1521, when a devastating fire broke out during a lavish Christmas feast, destroying large parts of the castle beyond repair. Despite this, the remaining structure is still incredibly impressive, with sweeping views and a real sense of its medieval past.
The best part, you can visit for free. Just be sure to check seasonal opening times before you go. And when you’re finished exploring, there’s a lovely ice cream parlour and tea room right next to the site, perfect for a well earned break.
Historic, atmospheric and wonderfully scenic, Brough Castle makes a great stop for anyone who loves a bit of adventure and storytelling in their day out 🌿🗡️

Let’s show some local love for Blencathra! 🍃

If you’re looking for a proper Lake District challenge, Blencathra is one of the most iconic peaks you can take on and it’s only 45 minutes from High Gaitle, making it ideal for a full day out in the hills ⛰️✨
Standing at 868 metres, Blencathra is one of the most recognisable of the 214 Wainwrights, famous for its dramatic rocky slopes and perfectly symmetrical shape. It’s also home to one of the UK’s most renowned ridges, Sharp Edge, a narrow, exposed scramble that’s only suitable for experienced walkers, but unforgettable for those who take it on.
There are plenty of routes to the top, including a popular 3 mile curving ridge that takes in six separate tops such as Hallsfell Top, Blease Fell and Scales Fell. Each offers incredible views and a real sense of achievement as you work your way along the mountain.
Parking is available in Scales or Threlkeld, but because Blencathra is such a well loved peak, spaces fill up quickly, so an early start is definitely worth it.
With its rugged beauty, thrilling ridges and sweeping panoramas, Blencathra is a must do for anyone who loves hiking and wants a day out that feels truly epic 🌄💚

If you’re staying with us and fancy a taste of local heritage, the Annandale Distillery in Annan is a brilliant place to visit 🥃✨
Originally founded in 1836, this historic distillery famously reopened in 2014 after almost a century of silence and it’s been producing award winning single malt whisky ever since. Known for its fruity character, Annandale crafts both peated and unpeated expressions, giving visitors a real flavour of traditional Lowland whisky with a modern twist.
Just 11 miles from High Gaitle Caravan Park, the distillery offers guided tours where you can explore the restored buildings, learn about the whisky making process and, of course, enjoy a tasting. There’s also a lovely coffee shop and gift shop, perfect for picking up a bottle or relaxing after your tour.
Rich history, great whisky and a beautiful setting, Annandale Distillery is a fantastic stop for anyone who enjoys local craftsmanship and a good dram 🌾🔥
