Let’s show some local love for Workington! 🍃

Workington is an ancient market and industrial town at the mouth of the River Derwent and remains the main shopping centre for West Cumbria. Parts of the town north of the river date back to Roman times, but Workington truly expanded in the 18th century with the rise of iron ore and coal mining.
It later became a major centre for iron and steel production, famously linked to Henry Bessemer’s revolutionary steel making process. Although steelmaking ended in 2006, Workington has since diversified into new industries ⚙️
⛪ Heritage & Architecture
Workington is home to several notable churches:
• St Michael’s - on its site since the 7th century, rebuilt after a 1994 fire
• St John’s - built in 1823 to commemorate Waterloo
• Our Lady & St Michael’s - a beautiful Pugin designed Catholic church
🏛️ Museums & Historic Sites
• Helena Thompson Museum - Georgian collections, local history and industrial heritage
• Workington Hall - a dramatic ruin built around a 14th century pele tower, once sheltering Mary Queen of Scots
• Jane Pit - remains of a 19th century coal mine
• Schoose Farm - an early 1800s model farm with windmill and historic outbuildings
🚆 Travel & Outdoors
Workington sits on the Cumbrian Coast railway line, offering easy links between Barrow and Carlisle. It’s also one of the starting points for the famous Sea to Sea (C2C) cycle route, making it a popular spot for cyclists 🚴‍♀️🌊

Morning walks around High Gaitle always come with little surprises — today it was these beautiful white lilacs catching the sunlight just right. Nature has a way of slowing everything down here, wrapping your stay in calm, colour, and fresh air. A perfect reminder to pause and enjoy the small things ✨🌼

"What a little gem of a site. we only stayed 1 night but it is very convenient, just off the motorway north of Carlisle and we will definitely use again. Facilities were spotless and nice touches like freezer and complimentary tea/coffee in the utility room and shower gels in the showers. Excellent secure dog exercise field with poo bin. Nice level pitches, we would happily stay here for a week, everything is so well done and reasonable price. thank you"

Let’s show some local love for Cockermouth! 🍃

If you’re exploring the western Lakes, Cockermouth is a wonderful market town that makes the perfect base for touring the region 🌿🏞️
Its historic High Street is largely unchanged, full of charm and character, and set against beautiful scenery where the River Cocker meets the River Derwent. The town is famously the birthplace of William Wordsworth, and his childhood home now serves as a museum with an impressive memorial bust and a fascinating look into the life of the Wordsworth family.
Cockermouth is also home to the Percy House Gallery, the town’s oldest surviving building, packed with paintings, textiles, ceramics, jewellery and more which is a real treasure trove for art lovers. For a hands on experience, the Lakeland Sheep & Wool Centre is brilliant: meet 19 different breeds of sheep, watch shearing demonstrations, and see the incredible bond between shepherd and dog up close.
Families will love Harris Park, with its riverside walks, play area, bowling and tennis. And don’t miss Woodhall Gardens, designed in 1910 by Thomas Mawson, complete with ornamental stone summer houses and a large fish pond filled with colourful goldfish.
Add in All Saints Church (built in 1395), regular local events, and the bonus of being close to golden beaches, and Cockermouth becomes a fantastic day out, full of history, scenery, creativity and plenty to keep everyone entertained 🌟🏡✨
