🐦🐦 BIRD OF THE MONTH 🐦🐦
🐦 ROBIN - Erithacus Rebecula 🐦
The robin is arguably our most familiar and favourite bird, especially at Christmas, being a favoured subject for Christmas Cards. It has long been a symbol of good luck, happiness and even a messenger for lost loved ones. The robin is easily recognised by it's red-orange breast and can be spotted as it sits on a convenient lookout post or branch to watch for movement of prey. It endears itself to us by being almost tame, some can even be tempted to feed from our hand (especially for mealworms) and it will follow gardeners as they dig, to take advantage of disturbed worms and insects.
They are aggressively territorial all year round, in Spring and Summer for breeding and in Autumn and Winter for feeding, sometimes even fighting to the death! Unusual for many other birds, Robins (both male and female) will sing all year round to defend their territories, so can be heard singing their beautiful melodic songs even in winter!
Juveniles are speckled brown and they may not have developed their orange breast, but are unmistakable from their shape and behaviour.
Robins have a β€˜tick tick’ alarm call, a lovely melodious warbling song and will even sing at night!
Thank you lovely guests for the fantastic photos 😊
