The Rotary Club of Thornhill and District Cheltenham Gold Cup for Cancer Charities.
On Friday 13th March 2026 The Rotary Club of Thornhill and District held their very popular
Cancer Charity Race afternoon. This is the 5th year that the event has been hosted at the
Woodland House Hotel.
The afternoon began at 12:30 with guests being welcomed with a canapés and prosecco reception.
The “Race Goers” in attendance entered into the spirit of the day by dressing for a day at the
races and creating a tremendous and sometimes raucous atmosphere. Live TV coverage of the
afternoon races was provided by T N McKay, English Street, Dumfries with the Rotary Club
providing a Tote betting system. Afternoon Cream Teas were served mid-afternoon with Prosecco free flowing during the day.
The main raffle prize of a magnificent Landscape painting donated by local artist Kathleen Wood, with additional prizes of afternnoon Tea for 2 being donated by Heathhall Garden Centre. For the 3rd year in a row Carlisle Race Course donated a Hospitality day at the
races for 4 people. This was Auctioned off at the end of the afternoon.
This very popular event could not have taken place without the continued support from our
sponsors, George McCall of The Woodland House Hotel for allowing us access to their venue and Calum McKay of, T N McKay, English Street, Dumfries for providing the large screen TV’s. Transport to and from the event was supplied by John Martin, Brownrigg’s Coach Hire, East Morton Street, Thornhill, which also allowed Rotary to donate the proceedings from the passengers to charity.
President Trevor D***s closed the afternoon by thanking Robbie Logan for comparing the afternoon, our sponsors for their continued support, the Rotary Convenors and members for organising and running of the event, donators of prize’s and last but certainly not least all the guests who came along to the races to support our three named charities. With final figures still to be confirmed it is hoped that the afternoon will have raised around £4,000 which will be shared between Young Lives V Cancer and Marie Curie.
