Last night we welcomed along, Gyllian Thomson who is an award winning local tapestry artist.

Gyllian set up her studio four years ago in Thornhill weaving unique handmade tapestries from her upright scaffold loom.

Driven by colour and lines, her work is vibrant and unique. Initially she paints on paper to create her designs. These are then translated into her work using cotton, wool, linen, acrylic and much more.

She is a very talented , skilful artist who is extremely passionate about the traditional art of weaving.

Thanks to Louise for arranging.

The Rotary Club of Thornhill and District Cheltenham Gold Cup for Cancer Charities.
On Friday 13th March 2026 The Rotary Club of Thornhill and District held their very popular
Cancer Charity Race afternoon. This is the 5th year that the event has been hosted at the
Woodland House Hotel.
The afternoon began at 12:30 with guests being welcomed with a canapés and prosecco reception.
The “Race Goers” in attendance entered into the spirit of the day by dressing for a day at the
races and creating a tremendous and sometimes raucous atmosphere. Live TV coverage of the
afternoon races was provided by T N McKay, English Street, Dumfries with the Rotary Club
providing a Tote betting system. Afternoon Cream Teas were served mid-afternoon with Prosecco free flowing during the day.
The main raffle prize of a magnificent Landscape painting donated by local artist Kathleen Wood, with additional prizes of afternnoon Tea for 2 being donated by Heathhall Garden Centre. For the 3rd year in a row Carlisle Race Course donated a Hospitality day at the
races for 4 people. This was Auctioned off at the end of the afternoon.
This very popular event could not have taken place without the continued support from our
sponsors, George McCall of The Woodland House Hotel for allowing us access to their venue and Calum McKay of, T N McKay, English Street, Dumfries for providing the large screen TV’s. Transport to and from the event was supplied by John Martin, Brownrigg’s Coach Hire, East Morton Street, Thornhill, which also allowed Rotary to donate the proceedings from the passengers to charity.
President Trevor D***s closed the afternoon by thanking Robbie Logan for comparing the afternoon, our sponsors for their continued support, the Rotary Convenors and members for organising and running of the event, donators of prize’s and last but certainly not least all the guests who came along to the races to support our three named charities. With final figures still to be confirmed it is hoped that the afternoon will have raised around £4,000 which will be shared between Young Lives V Cancer and Marie Curie.

The Rotary Club of Thornhill & District held its annual Burns Supper on Wednesday 14th January with nearly 75 guests in attendance.

The Guests at the supper were entertained by a range of contributors including Wallace Hall students Jenna and Aine who performed a range of Burns songs and traditional music on the accordion with the haggis and the top table piped in by Thornhill local Wullie Prentice.

The Address to the Haggis and several recitals including a world class performance of Tam O’Shanter were performed by Keegan Shaw with the Immortal Memory given by Darren Shaw. The Toast to the Lassies was proposed by Ron Matthews with the reply given by Kirstie Scrimgeour.

Thank you also to Harry and his team from Knockerhair Hospitality for a delicious supper.

The proceedings were chaired by Thornhill Rotary Club’s Ian Lewis who said,

“We had an excellent Burns Supper this year and my thanks goes to all of those who performed and spoke at this sell-out event.

With our Rotary Club being in the heart of where Rabbie Burns lived, worked and travelled, we take particular pride in organising Thornhill’s Burns Supper and it was great to see the work of Burns being brought to life from songs to poems to stories of the National Bard’s life.”

Thanks again to everyone in attendance for a great evening.

Our first meeting of 2026, it was good to see everyone again after the Christmas break and such a good turnout considering what a cold night it is!

Tonight we welcomed along our guest speaker Maria Navarro who 12 years ago moved to her ancestors home of Closeburn castle! Thank you, Alistair for arranging for Maria to speak to us.

Maria told us a bit about the history of the castle, paranormal activity (which she prefers not to think too much about….) and the business she now runs from the castle; the escape rooms.

Thanks for coming along, Maria. A really interesting talk and amazing to know how many people don’t actually realise Closeburn has a castle.

Wednesday evening was our last meeting of 2025. Rotarians all enjoyed a lovely Christmas dinner at the BQA.

After dinner we were delighted to induct new member, Dr Grant Fergusson and Stewart Lee was also elected as Vice President.

With the formalities out the way we then moved on to the entertainment, thanks for Trevor for preforming with his guitar and the introduction of pass the parcel was certainly a first but huge fun!

On behalf of Rotary Club of Thornhill and District we’d like to wish all a very Merry Christmas and Happy 2026 when it comes.
