Just because it’s rainy and cold doesn’t mean we cancel our animal - facilitated therapeutic sessions for young people here at Goxhill Meadows Hearts and Minds! Our skin may indeed be waterproof but it’s still lovely to get out of the rain sit by the log burner to dry out and warm up after a few downpours have wet us through ! Our sessions run all year round and we are always busy with young people right through the winter months. Weather’s just weather as long as you’re dressed for it ! And we always have spare waterproofs and wellies so it’s no excuse!

Did you bring your horse glamping at Goxhill Meadows this year ? As we close for this season on this glorious weekend I decided to stay in the Landpods myself and escape from the usual jobs and routine in the farm for 24 hours . I took Connie on a long hack, read my book in the sunshine, cooked over a fire, enjoyed a b**r or 2, gazed at the stars and had a great night’s sleep in a Landpod . Do I feel as if I escaped and relaxed ? I certainly did ! In fact I’m sleeping out there again tonight !
I’d like to thank everyone who has chosen to come and stay with us this year …. Return visitors, new guests, those with children, dogs or horses …. Maybe even all three ! I hope you have enjoyed the peace and solitude, the chance to relax and breathe freely, to enjoy nature and the company of those you love ❤️
We will be re-opening in Spring 2027 . Anyone wanting to book please email me at [email protected]
Our online booking system will be live in February 2027 but I can make reservations via email before then .

CONNECTION VERSUS PROXIMITY

Something I hear from people a lot when they are asking about their horses is "We have a good connection, he's kind of a pocket horse, he follows me everywhere, but..." and they then go on to describe a problem that usually is a result from a lack of connection.

Proximity is not connection.

Clinginess is not connection.

Try not to get connection and physical closeness confused.

Connection is rooted in attunement, which is (as Sarah Schlote of Equusoma: Horse-Human Trauma Recovery puts it) 'the sense of being seen, being heard, feeling felt and getting gotten". It's about them trusting you, trusting you have their best interest at heart, and the feeling of safety you give them when you have proven that you are as aware as the rest of their heard members.

Clinginess is a juvenile behaviour that the mother (and other herd members) allows up until the age of weaning, then they start to work on collision avoidance (a term I picked up reading the works of British ethologist Lucy Rees). Installing collision avoidance is what allows a herd of horses to move safely together at speed like a school of fish or a flock of birds. It's also part of the mental maturation process, and if that process doesn't happen horses tend to retain a that and a lot of other juvenile behaviours.

So beware of the trap of thinking that you have connection because you have constant proximity. It may just be a juvenile behaviour in disguise.

A first ever visit to the beach for one of our glamper’s ponies was a great success yesterday! Our 3 hour hack took us straight from the glampsite across bridleways, tracks, lanes and minor roads to Mappleton Beach. We spent an hour in the beach, grabbed ice creams from cafe there and then had a leisurely ride home down the Trans Pennine Trail. What a great afternoon 🐴 🍦😍
