Balance: The Foundation of Consistent Golf

When most golfers hear the word “balance”, they immediately think about not falling over during the swing.

While that’s certainly important, balance in golf goes much deeper than that.

The best golfers display balance in both their body and their mind. They remain stable throughout the swing, but they also stay emotionally balanced regardless of whether the previous shot was good or bad.

Many golfers allow one poor shot to affect the next. Frustration creeps in, tension increases and decision-making becomes rushed. Before long, a single mistake has turned into a costly sequence of errors.

The most consistent players understand that every shot is a new challenge. They focus on the present moment rather than dwelling on what has already happened.

Physical balance is equally important.

A good golf swing requires stability and control. Rather than swaying from side to side, great ball strikers stay centred and maintain pressure in their lead side throughout the swing. This helps create a predictable low point, better contact and more consistent ball flight.

One of the reasons many golfers struggle with consistency is that they move excessively during the swing. When the body’s centre of mass shifts too much, controlling the strike becomes much more difficult.

The goal isn’t to make a swing that looks athletic. The goal is to create a movement that allows the club to return to the ball consistently.

The next time you practice, pay attention to your finish position.

Can you hold your finish comfortably for three seconds?

If you can, there’s a good chance your swing was balanced and under control. If you struggle to maintain your finish, it may indicate that your movement was excessive or that you lost control of your centre during the swing.

Balance is not just about staying upright.

It’s about controlling your movement, managing your emotions and giving yourself the best opportunity to produce the same swing time after time.

When your body and mind are working together, consistency becomes much easier to achieve.

Ready to shave strokes off your scorecard and turn frustrating three-putts into confident finishes? ⛳️ Putting Clinic Highlights ⛳️

Golfers at our first putting clinic of the year at Charnwood Forest Golf Club discovered practical techniques they could apply immediately to improve consistency, boost confidence on the greens, and hole more putts under pressure.

One thing that surprises many golfers is that putting isn’t just about “feel” – there are specific skills that can be learned, practised, and improved.

During the clinic we covered:
✅ Distance control
✅ Starting the ball on line
✅ Building a repeatable putting stroke
✅ Practice drills you can use immediately

The golfers who attended saw some fantastic improvements in a very short space of time, and it’s always rewarding to watch confidence grow as the putts start finding the hole.

If putting is costing you shots on the course, keep an eye out for future clinics or drop me a message to find out more about individual coaching.
