It’s getting dark earlier now. The rain has returned, and suddenly it’s time to light the fires.

At Elderfold, we always look forward to Autumn. Muddy walks with the dogs, a bottle open by the fire when we return home. Then a long bath with the candles lit and nowhere to be until morning.

The Peak District does autumn well. Come and see us.

The light changes, the colours deepen and the fire is lit by teatime. Slow mornings, muddy boots by the door, and a cottage that's warm when you get back. Autumn has come to the farm.

Nobody told our animals this was meant to be a quiet place. Every one of them has strong opinions, habits and a favourite spot by the gate for treats. Stay a few days and you'll know them all by name.

Some details take a moment before you notice them.

The hand-forged window stay. The worn brass of the door ring. The markings in the flagstones underfoot.

These are the things that might not hit you when you arrive, but are the beautiful signs you’re staying in a house with centuries of history.

Small things. Easy to miss on a first walk round.
