β€œI did not enter awards to win trophies. I entered them to improve my business."

That might sound strange coming from someone who now co-owns the Loo of the Year Awards, but it is true.
Before my husband Charles and I took over the awards programme, we were entrants ourselves through our luxury mobile toilet business, A Plush Flush.
Like many business owners, we were busy running the day-to-day operation and focused on looking after our customers. Entering an awards programme gave us the opportunity to stop and take stock of what we had achieved over the previous 12 months.
The process encouraged us to review our performance, standards, finances, staff development, policies and procedures. It helped us identify what was working well, what could be improved, and where we wanted the business to be over the next year.
We first became aware of the Loo of the Year Awards after being nominated in the Mobile Toilet category. Following our inspection and grading, we decided to enter again the following year. It was not just about winning an award. It was about benchmarking our business, maintaining high standards, receiving independent feedback and understanding changes within the industry.
We proudly displayed our gradings and awards on our website and marketing materials. The result? We secured work with several blue-chip companies who recognised the value of independent accreditation and quality standards.
Recently, I was listening to Sara Davies and her sister Helen Goddard on their MYB podcast. Sara spoke about an award she won over 20 years ago which led to national press coverage and ultimately helped Dragon's Den discover her and invite her onto the programme.
That really resonated with me because it highlights something many people overlook: you never know where an award entry might lead.
Of course, winning is wonderful. But sometimes the greatest value comes from the reflection, planning, recognition and opportunities that follow.
So, if you have been considering entering an awards programme, do not focus solely on the trophy. Focus on what you might learn about your business along the way.
As someone who works in the toilet industry, I know a thing or two about standards and awards are one of the best ways to measure them! πŸš»πŸ†

One of the real benefits of attending Expos is that the conversations do not end when the event finishes.
Following last week's Scottish Expo, I have been enjoying a number of follow-up 1:2:1 meetings with some of the fantastic people I met there. It is been a great opportunity to learn more about each other's businesses, share experiences, and explore ways we can support and help one another.
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of catching up with Ross Cowan and hearing more about his work in customer service excellence training. Ross is passionate about helping businesses create exceptional customer experiences, and it was fascinating to learn about his approach to developing and refining customer service skills. We discovered plenty of common ground between our businesses and shared values around delivering quality and excellence.
I am looking forward to several more 1:2:1 meetings over the coming days before heading off to Chester next week for another expo and another opportunity to meet inspiring business owners and make Loo of The Year Awards Ltd even more visable.
Networking is not just about making connections, it is about building relationships that create opportunities for everyone involved.

🚨 Your customers do not care about your toilets.

Most customers do not think about your toilets at all.
🚽 Until they are dirty!
🚽 Until there is no toilet paper!
🚽 Until the soap dispenser is empty!
🚽 Until they smell bad!
🚽 Until they do not feel safe!
Then suddenly, your toilets become the most memorable part of their visit.

However it is not just customers!
Your employees notice too!
The people who use those facilities every day are forming opinions about how much their comfort, wellbeing and dignity matter.

People rarely comment on a great washroom.
But they remember a poor one!
Your washrooms may not be part of your marketing strategy, but they are part of your customer experience, employee experience and ultimately your reputation.
What would your washrooms say about your organisation today?

At the Loo of the Year Awards, we help organisations understand how their washroom facilities are performing and identify opportunities for improvement, ensuring they leave the right impression on customers, visitors and staff alike.

Have you ever had one of those moments when panic suddenly sets in?

Months ago, we ordered a large display banner for upcoming expos and shows. I made what I thought was a sensible decision and asked the supplier's design team to create the artwork. After all, they design exhibition displays every day, so surely their experience and creativity would produce something far better than I could describe.
My brief was simple (or so I thought): create intrigue, keep it clean, and make it less rather than more.
Fast forward to receiving the second design proof and it became painfully obvious that the problem was not the designer, it was me. I had not clearly communicated what I was looking for, and with just seven working days until the expo, I could feel the pressure mounting.
Enter Al Price from The Brand Transformer
Within 48 hours, Al had listened, understood, and somehow translated the vision in my head into something visual. He came back with a fantastic concept, worked collaboratively with the banner company, and ensured everything stayed on track so the display could still be produced and delivered in time.
I am not entirely sure I gave Al any different instructions than I had given previously, but what undoubtedly helped was that he already knew me, Charles, Jane, and the Loo of the Year Awards. That understanding, combined with his creativity, communication, and ability to deliver under pressure, made all the difference.
A huge thank you, Al. Your vision, delivery, and communication were second to none, and you have turned a potential disaster into something we were genuinely excited to showcase for the first time last week.

Now, who else has left something until the last minute and been rescued by a brilliant professional?

So on my way up to Glasgow to the Scotland Business Expo tomorrow, just popped into the Roadchef Setvices at Annandale to use the facilities. Great to see them proudly displaying their Loo of The Year Awards certificates and the experience was good and up to the standard of grading. Lovely to talk to their Site Director Lyn who saw me taking the photo and quizzed me to whether everything was ok.
